New Beetle 1.4, 1.9 TDI, 2.0 TDI: the same engine capacity does not mean the same gearbox

On the New Beetle produced from 2001 to 2019, six distinct engines are listed, and each requires its own transmission — sometimes in several variants depending on the year or engine code. The essential starting point is therefore the engine code stamped on the block, not the stated engine capacity.

Five and six speeds depending on the powertrain

The older versions — 1.4 (BCA) and 1.9 TDI (ALH, ATD, BEW) — take exclusively a 5-speed manual gearbox. The 1.6 TDI (CAYC) shares this same number of speeds in manual form, but can also take a DSG 7: two architectures with no common parts. The more recent petrol engines, 1.2 TSI (CBZA, CBZB, CBZC) and 1.4 TSI (CAVD, CTHD, CTKA), move to a 6-speed manual. The 2.0 TDI (CBEA, CJAA) is the only diesel engine to offer both: 6-speed manual or DSG 7.

DSG 7: what the part includes

The DSG 7 gearboxes available in this range are supplied without the mechatronic unit, but include a new dual-clutch assembly. This is an important technical point to bear in mind before ordering, particularly if the diagnosis has identified a fault with the mechatronic unit alone. For both available purchase options — exchange and customer unit rebuild — the nature of the returned part is identical; only the logistics process differs.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a gearbox for this Volkswagen model in stock?

We currently list 19 references reconditioned for this model. Availability depends on the exact engine: enter your number plate to confirm stock in real time, or request an online quote.

How can I be sure it is compatible with my Volkswagen?

Compatibility depends on the engine / gearbox code, not just the model. The most reliable way is your number plate or registration document: our advisers confirm the right gearbox for your vehicle before you order.

Do I need to send back my old unit?

Yes, that is the principle of an exchange unit: you return your old gearbox (the core), which we recondition in turn. We arrange transport both ways, so you don't have to handle any logistics.

How long does it take to receive the gearbox for my Volkswagen?

Once compatibility is confirmed and depending on the availability of the reference, the part leaves our workshop ready to fit, delivered throughout France and Europe, with payment in instalments available (up to 10 payments).
