Renault engines changed profoundly between 1997 and 2024: the engine code is the only reliable way to identify the right unit

From the late 1990s to the mid-2020s, Renault went through several major technological shifts. The 1.9 dCi F9Q and the 1.9 D F8Q belong to an earlier era, gradually replaced by the K9K (1.5 dCi), which spawned forty distinct codes — from K9K292 to K9K896 — across a period covering Clio, Mégane, Scénic, Kangoo, Captur and Modus. Despite sharing the same engine capacity, these variants differ in injection generation, emissions standard and internal architecture: a K9K700 is not interchangeable with a K9K802, even on the same model. Then came the petrol TCe units — H5F (1.2), H5H (1.3), H4B (0.9) — fitted to recent generations of Clio, Captur, Kadjar and Mégane from the 2010s onwards.

Vans and large-capacity engines: families in their own right

The van range — Master, Trafic, Mascott, Messenger — follows a different logic. The 2.3 dCi M9T alone accounts for twenty-two codes (M9T672 to M9T_716), split according to power output, emissions standard and year of manufacture. The 2.5 dCi G9U predates this generation on Master and Trafic, with six distinct codes. For executive saloons and MPVs — Laguna, Vel Satis, Espace — the 2.0 dCi M9R (seventeen codes) and the 2.2 dCi G9T coexisted, with the G9T also fitted to certain first-generation Trafic models. The 3.0 dCi S9W and the Iveco 2.8 dCi references (Mascott) are even more specific cases, where identification by the code stamped on the block is essential.

Why the engine code takes precedence over engine capacity and model name

A 2004 Scénic 1.5 dCi and a 2012 Scénic 1.5 dCi share nothing but the stated engine capacity: the K9K codes and their variants diverge in cylinder head, crankshaft, engine management and mechanical compatibility. Likewise, the 1.6 dCi R9M comes in thirteen codes (R9M402 to R9MME), covering Mégane, Kadjar and Koleos across very specific production years. Before searching for a reconditioned engine in this collection, the only valid starting point is the engine code stamped on the block, not the engine capacity or the model's commercial designation. This code determines the exact compatible reference, regardless of the engine variant.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Renault engine cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Renault engine compatible with my exact model?

We offer 249 references covering the main Renault models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact engine for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original engine rebuilt in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
