Renault Clio Engine: do your 1.2 16V, 1.3 TCe or 1.5 dCi really share the same block?

The answer is no — and that's where mistakes creep in. On the Clio between 2001 and 2019, three engine variants coexist (1.2 16V, 1.3 TCe, 1.5 dCi), yet nineteen distinct engine codes are spread across them. The 1.5 dCi alone covers sixteen K9K variants — from K9K700 to K9K792 — corresponding to different power outputs, emissions standards and cylinder head generations. Two Clio 1.5 dCi models from close production years can therefore carry incompatible blocks. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable criterion for ordering the correct bare engine.

Three families, three identification logics

The 1.2 16V uses a single code, D4F_740: identification here is straightforward. The 1.3 TCe, a more recent engine, comes in two H5H codes — H5H 470 and H5H_490 — which correspond to distinct development stages despite an identical engine capacity. For the 1.5 dCi, the complexity is at its greatest: sixteen K9K codes span the entire 2001–2019 period, and confusing, for example, K9K710 with K9K772 can result in receiving a block that is incompatible with the original injection circuit or mounting points.

All engines listed here are bare engines, supplied without ancillaries. The collection covers all nineteen codes referenced above, in both diesel and petrol. Two options are available depending on the reference: the standard exchange and a rebuilt-to-0-km option. These two options are not technically equivalent: the latter involves a full reconditioning of the block's internal tolerances, and is particularly recommended where wear is advanced or mileage is high.
