The 1.5 dCi Clio is built around a single diesel architecture, the K9K family, but this family spans sixteen engine code variants between 2001 and 2019. Behind an identical engine capacity lie different cylinder head generations, injection systems and power outputs — 65, 68, 75, 86, 90 hp depending on the model year — each corresponding to a distinct block that is not interchangeable with the others.

Read the K9K code before anything else

The codes run from K9K700 à K9K792; each suffix denotes a specific evolution of the block. A K9K700 (first generation, 65 hp, 2001) has neither the same cylinder head architecture nor the same injection system as a K9K790 or K9K792 from later model years. The code is physically stamped on the engine block and is the only reliable identifier for ordering the correct part.

Known weak points of the K9K family

On early K9K generations, the oil pump and the crankshaft are documented failure points, typically linked to poor oil maintenance. Mid-generation high-pressure injection variants show weaknesses in the timing system when the belt or chain is replaced too late.
