Six diesel engines, 40 engine codes: the Master's failure points between 2000 and 2024

The engine is the most frequently replaced component on the Master, and for recurring reasons depending on the generation. With the G9T (2.2 dCi) blocks, head gasket and cooling problems are well documented in the early years of service. The G9U (2.5 dCi) suffered failures linked to thermal management and oil circuit fouling, particularly on vehicles used heavily in urban conditions. The M9T (2.3 dCi), fitted from 2010 and still in production through to 2024, accounts for the greatest number of variants — 22 codes — and has known weaknesses in the timing systems and turbochargers at high mileage, which is common on vans in daily heavy use. These symptoms (loss of power, excessive smoke, abnormal oil consumption, mechanical noise on start-up) frequently lead to a complete engine replacement rather than a partial repair.

Finding your way across six engines and their specific codes

This guide covers six engines: 2.2 dCi, 2.2 dCi 90, 2.5 dCi, 1.9 dCi, 3.0 dCi and 2.3 dCi. The 3.0 dCi (blocks S9W_702, ZD3200, ZD3202) is the least represented engine, with just three codes. The 1.9 dCi (F9Q family, six codes from F9Q-670 to F9Q-774) covers the early years of the Master II. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference when ordering the correct part: two Masters with the same mileage and the same stated engine capacity can take incompatible blocks depending on the phase or power output. This is particularly true of the 2.3 dCi, whose 22 M9T codes are not all interchangeable from one phase to the next.

Commercial use: what it means for replacement

The Master is used almost exclusively in a professional context — transport, trades and logistics. Engines accumulate short cycles and heavy loads, conditions that accelerate wear on piston rings and bearings. A reconditioned engine is rebuilt to 0 km on all critical internal components, which makes it the right choice for a vehicle whose workload cannot afford extended downtime.
