On the diesel Master, engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the gearbox: six engine variants, three transmission families

The Master spans 1998 to 2024 with six distinct diesel engines — 1.9 dCi, 2.2 dCi, 2.5 dCi, 2.8 dCi, 3.0 dCi and 2.3 dCi — and the same engine capacity can correspond to entirely different gearboxes depending on the engine code. A 2.5 dCi may be fitted with a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual or a Quickshift, depending on whether it carries engine code G9U 720, G9U 724, G9U 750 or G9U 754: without checking this code on the block, the risk of ordering the wrong unit is very real.

Quickshift, 5-speed, 6-speed: which family for which engine?

The Quickshift — an automated manual gearbox — is fitted to four engines: 2.2 dCi, 2.5 dCi, 2.8 dCi and 2.3 dCi. It is sold without the robot actuator, which is a separate component. The 5-speed manual covers the older generations: 1.9 dCi (code F9Q), 2.2 dCi (codes G9T720, G9T722, G9T750) and 2.8 dCi (codes S9W700, S9W702). The 6-speed manual is standard on the 3.0 dCi (ZD3200, ZD3202), on the more recent variants of the 2.5 dCi, and across the entire 2.3 dCi range — whose seven M9T engine code variants, from M9T 670 to M9T 716, do not all share the same gearbox despite having an identical engine capacity.

1.9 dCi and 3.0 dCi: the engines at the edges of the range

The 1.9 dCi (F9Q) is the least represented engine in this collection, paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual. The 3.0 dCi (ZD3200, ZD3202) is fitted only with a 6-speed manual and has no Quickshift variant. These are also the two engines for which the number of available references is most limited: identifying the exact engine code is all the more critical to avoid any ordering errors.
