Koleos 2.0 dCi: several 6-speed gearboxes for the same engine, from 2008 to 2016

On the Koleos 2.0 dCi, engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the correct gearbox. TheM9Rcomes in several variants — M9R830, M9R832, M9R833, M9R855, M9R856 — and each may correspond to a different gearbox depending on the year of production. A Koleos built between 2008 and 2010 does not necessarily carry the same transmission as one built between 2013 and 2016, even at the same power output. Before taking any steps, the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable reference for determining which unit matches the vehicle.

2.0 dCi and 1.6 dCi: two engine families, one gearbox architecture

The diesel Koleos is built around two distinct engines. The2.0 dCi (M9R)accounts for the vast majority of vehicles concerned and covers five engine code variants. The1.6 dCi (R9M)appeared later in the range and uses a different block architecture with its own 6-speed manual gearbox. These two engines do not share the same transmission: a gearbox from an M9R vehicle cannot be fitted to an R9M, and vice versa.

SUV use and mechanical demands

The Koleos is a mixed-use SUV, frequently driven under load or used for towing. The 6-speed manual gearbox on the 2.0 dCi is designed to handle high torque, and premature wear is generally linked to this kind of intensive use — a heavily loaded differential, and an integrated transfer case on 4-wheel drive versions. Accurately identifying the engine code remains an essential first step to ensure compatibility between the gearbox offered and the vehicle.
