Why does the Laguna gearbox fail, and which unit is the right match?

The Renault Laguna spanned three generations from 1997 to 2015, and its manual gearboxes have a well-documented history of issues: premature synchromesh wear, stiff or jumping gear changes, casing leaks, and even reverse gear seizure on certain units. These symptoms affect both the 5-speed gearboxes paired with the petrol engines 1.8 (F4P) and 1.6 (K4M) and the 6-speed gearboxes coupled to the diesel engines 1.9 dCi (F9Q), 2.0 dCi (M9R) and 2.2 dCi (G9T). When internal repair is no longer viable, a complete gearbox replacement is the only lasting solution.

5 or 6 speeds: a distinction that depends on the engine, not the trim level

On the Laguna, the number of gears follows the engine, not the specification level. The 1.8 and 1.6 engines are fitted exclusively with a 5-speed gearbox. The 1.9 dCi can be paired with either a 5- or 6-speed gearbox depending on the year and engine code variant (F9Q670, F9Q674, F9Q750, F9Q752, F9Q758, F9Q759). The 2.0 dCi (M9R), 2.2 dCi (G9T) and 1.5 dCi (K9K) engines are all fitted with a 6-speed gearbox. Two gearboxes with the same engine capacity are not necessarily compatible if the engine codes differ: the engine code stamped under the bonnet (e.g. M9R742, M9R802, G9T 728, G9T 750, K9K780, K9K846) is the determining factor when confirming compatibility before placing any order.

The 2.2 dCi G9T and high-output diesel engines

The 2.2 dCi (G9T), fitted to the Laguna II, produced up to 150 hp and placed greater demands on the gearbox than the other diesel engines in the range. The gearboxes associated with this engine (references TL4045, TL4013) are dimensionally different from those of the 1.9 dCi and are not interchangeable with them. For the 2.0 dCi M9R (Laguna III, from 2007 onwards), the 6-speed gearbox is likewise specific to this engine code family.
