The most common pitfall on the Laguna involves the 1.9 dCi: with its six F9Q codes (F9Q670, F9Q674, F9Q750, F9Q752, F9Q758, F9Q759), this engine capacity can be fitted with either a 5-speed or a 6-speed gearbox depending on the exact code. Mixing up any two of these codes means ordering the wrong part. The same logic applies to the 2.0 dCi, which has five distinct M9R codes (M9R, M9R742, M9R744, M9R802, M9R854) — all paired with a 6-speed manual, but not necessarily the same gearbox reference. The engine code stamped on the block is therefore the essential starting point, well before engine capacity or year of manufacture.

Diesel or petrol: two gearbox families, different gear ratios

The diesel engines (1.5 dCi K9K, 1.9 dCi F9Q, 2.0 dCi M9R, 2.2 dCi G9T) all receive 6-speed gearboxes, with the exception of certain 1.9 dCi versions which retain a 5-speed. The Laguna's petrol units — the 1.6 K4M and the 1.8 F4P — are invariably paired with a 5-speed manual. This 5/6-speed distinction is not trivial: the casings, shafts and controls are not shared between the two families, even when the differential dimensions are similar.

2.2 dCi and 1.5 dCi: G9T and K9K codes that must not be interchanged

The 2.2 dCi (G9T, G9T 728, G9T 750) is an engine found on the early Laguna II; the 1.5 dCi (K9K, K9K780, K9K846) appeared later in the range. Their respective 6-speed gearboxes are not interchangeable. For the 1.5 dCi in particular, the K9K code alone is not sufficient: K9K780 and K9K846 correspond to different stages of development, which must be verified on the engine plate before placing any order.
