7 engine variants in the Scénic catalogue, but 24 distinct engine codes: the real selection criterion

On the Scénic from 2003 to 2016, the same engine capacity can correspond to very different engine codes that do not share the same gearbox. The most striking example: the 1.9 dCi alone covers nine codes — F9Q, F9Q732, F9Q733, F9Q803, F9Q804, F9Q812, F9Q816, F9Q870, F9Q872 — depending on the vehicle's generation and its market of origin. Ordering a 6-speed gearbox without knowing the exact code stamped on the block is a sure way to end up with a unit that simply won't fit.

5-speed or 6-speed: a distinction that doesn't follow engine capacity logic

Only two engine-gearbox combinations come with a 5-speed manual: the 1.5 dCi (depending on the code: K9K722, K9K728, K9K729, K9K832 or K9K836) and the 2.0 petrol (F4R 770 or F4R 771). All other engine variants — 1.2 TCe, 1.6 dCi, 1.7 dCi, 1.9 dCi, 2.0 dCi — are fitted exclusively with a 6-speed gearbox. This split comes down to when each engine was introduced on the model, not its power output or fuel type.

Diesel and petrol: two engine families with nothing in common mechanically

The catalogue covers two distinct ranges. On the diesel side, six engine variants coexist with clearly separate code families: K9K for the 1.5 dCi, F9Q for the 1.9 dCi, R9M and its variants R9M402 and R9M404 for the 1.6 dCi, R9N for the 1.7 dCi, and M9R700 or M9R802 for the 2.0 dCi. On the petrol side, the 1.2 TCe comes in H5F400 and H5F408. Each code family corresponds to a specific gearbox: two codes from the same engine may be fitted to gearboxes with different references depending on the year the Scénic was first registered. The engine code therefore remains the only reliable starting point for identifying the correct part.
