Over this period, the Scénic was available with seven engine options — six diesel and one petrol — all fitted with manual gearboxes, in 5 or 6 speeds depending on the generation and engine. The choice between the two purchasing options available here comes down to one practical factor: is your original gearbox salvageable? If it is, rebuilding your own unit makes sense when the gearbox is rare or when you want your exact unit reconditioned and returned. If your gearbox is too badly damaged or missing altogether, an exchange from stock is the straightforward route.

Which gearbox for which engine and year

The 1.5 dCi (codes K9K, K9K722, K9K728, K9K729, K9K832, K9K836) is the most complex case: it takes a 5-speed gearbox in the early years of the Scénic II, then a 6-speed in later versions. Ordering without checking the number of speeds on your original gearbox is the most common mistake with this engine. The 1.9 dCi (F9Q, F9Q732, F9Q733, F9Q803, F9Q804, F9Q812, F9Q816, F9Q870, F9Q872) is exclusively 6-speed, as is the 1.6 dCi (R9M, R9M402, R9M404), the 2.0 dCi (M9R700, M9R802), the 1.2 TCe (H5F400, H5F408) and the 1.7 dCi (R9N). Only the 2.0 petrol (F4R 770, F4R 771) retains a 5-speed gearbox throughout its entire time in the range.

Identifying the correct reference: the engine code takes priority over engine capacity

Two engines can share the same engine capacity whilst taking incompatible gearboxes — as is the case with the 2.0 petrol and the 2.0 dCi. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference to cross-check against gearbox references (TL4, JC5, JR5, ND4 and PK4 series are all featured in this catalogue). On the 1.9 dCi in particular, the large number of F9Q code variants means you must check the suffix carefully before ordering, as several distinct gearboxes exist for this engine across the Scénic I and II years.
