Mégane Gearbox from 1995 to 2020: why the same engine can require different parts depending on the generation

Over twenty-five years of the Mégane, ten petrol and diesel engines came and went, and several of them were paired with different gearboxes depending on the generation of the vehicle. The most common case: the 1.5 dCi K9K is available with either a 5-speed or 6-speed manual gearbox, and the 1.9 dCi — engine codes F9Q800, F9Q803, F9Q870, F9Q872 — follows the same logic. These two diesel families cover overlapping years, which means that engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the exact part. The engine code stamped on the block, cross-referenced with the year of first registration, remains the essential starting point.

Diesel: three engine families, gearboxes that do not overlap

The 2.0 dCi (codes M9R, M9R700, M9R722, M9R744) is only available with a 6-speed manual, as is the 1.6 dCi R9M. These two more recent engines share no gearbox with the 1.9 dCi or the 1.5 dCi, even when the number of ratios is the same. Confusion is common in the workshop when mechanics focus solely on the number of gears without checking the gearbox reference.

Petrol: from the K7M to the F4Rt, very different configurations

On the petrol side, the range is wide. The 1.6i 8V K7M and the 1.8 F4P are only available with a 5-speed manual, whereas the 2.0 TCe F4R 872 (F4Rt) and the 1.2 TCe (H5F400, H5F403, H5F405) are exclusively paired with a 6-speed manual. The 1.6 K4M, on the other hand, can take either depending on the generation — an additional point to watch out for with this very widely used engine. The naturally aspirated 2.0 F4R remains a 5-speed manual. Two purchasing options are available depending on the reference: exchange or customer unit rebuild, subject to availability and the condition of the original part.
