Mégane 1.6 K4M: two gearbox families across sixteen years of production

Between 1999 and 2015, the 1.6 petrol engine with code K4M spanned three generations of Mégane without changing its block — but not without changing its gearbox. The key turning point came with the Mégane III: the 5-speed manual (JB3 and JH3 families) was fitted to the earlier generations, while the 6-speed manual (TL4 family) became standard from the third generation onwards. A 2008 vehicle and a 2012 vehicle with the same K4M therefore do not take the same part.

Identify the correct generation first

The main risk with this range is confusing the two families based solely on the engine code. The K4M appears across the entire 1999–2015 span, but the associated gearboxes have different casings, ratios and mountings. The reference stamped on the gearbox casing — not the engine code — is the only way to confirm the exact family. References such as JB3953, JB3982, JB1198 correspond to the 5-speed gearboxes; TL4028 belongs to the 6-speed. A swap between these two families is mechanically impossible.
