1.5 dCi Mégane: 5-speed or 6-speed gearbox – how do you know which one your vehicle has?

On the Mégane 1.5 dCi, the question of whether you have a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed manual is far from trivial: both exist on the same engine, depending on the generation and year of production, from 2002 to 2020. There is no automatic, automated manual or dual-clutch version within this range — the 1.5 dCi Mégane is exclusively paired with manual gearboxes. The choice is therefore between JR5 gearbox (5-speed) and TL4 or TL6 gearbox (6-speed), two distinct families that are not mechanically interchangeable.

K9K: one engine code, several possible gearboxes

All 1.5 dCi Mégane models share the engine code K9K, available in numerous power variants (70, 80, 86, 90, 95, 105, 110 hp). The power output and generation of the Mégane directly determine which gearbox was fitted at the factory. A K9K 70 hp in a Mégane II does not come with the same gearbox as a K9K 110 hp in a Mégane III. Identifying the exact gearbox reference — visible on the plate fixed to the casing — remains the only reliable way to confirm compatibility before placing an order.

Key points to watch out for on the JR5 and TL4 / TL6 gearboxes

The JR5 is known for premature wear of the primary shaft bearing and stiff gear changes when cold, symptoms that commonly appear from 150,000 km onwards. The TL4 and TL6 families are generally more robust, but can sometimes suffer from selector fork issues on the higher gears under intensive motorway use. In both cases, a noisy gearbox in gear or juddering during gear changes typically points to an internal fault rather than a clutch problem.
