5 or 6 speeds, petrol or diesel: which gearbox fits your Espace?

The answer depends above all on the engine, not the model year. On the Espace IV (2002–2014), three engine options were available — two petrol and one diesel — and each requires a specific gearbox, sometimes in two different speed variants.

2.0 petrol: three engine codes, five or six speeds

This is the broadest range covered on this page. The 2.0 petrol encompasses three engine codes: F4R794, F4R795 and F4R796. These codes reflect internal evolutions of the block that determine which gearbox is compatible: some configurations take a 5-speed manual, others a 6-speed manual. Checking the engine code on the identification plate before ordering is essential, as the engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the correct gearbox.

2.2 dCi and 2.0 dCi: two diesels, two different architectures

The 2.2 dCi (engine code G9T710) is paired with a 5-speed manual. The 2.0 dCi (engine code M9R) takes a 6-speed manual. These two diesel blocks do not share the same mechanical family and their gearboxes are not interchangeable. The 2.2 dCi belongs to the early years of the Espace IV, whereas the M9R appeared later in the model's life; mixing up the two generations of diesel engine is the most common mistake when searching for a replacement part.
