The Kangoo gearbox changed family twice in twenty-four years

From 1997 to 2021, the Kangoo went through two major generations and several mechanical overhauls that directly affected the gearboxes fitted at the factory. The earliest versions (Kangoo I) used gearboxes from the JB and JC families, paired with the K7M and D4F petrol engines and the F9Q diesel. The Kangoo II, launched in 2008, introduced the JR5 and TL4 families, used notably with the 1.5 dCi and its K9K engine codes, followed by the 1.2 TCe H5F. The 2008 cut-off date is therefore the first reference point to check before any identification.

Diesel: F9Q and K9K – two engines that don't take the same gearbox

The 1.9 dCi F9Q (codes F9Q and F9Q 790) is exclusive to the Kangoo I and takes a 5-speed manual gearbox from the JB or JC family depending on the variant. The 1.5 dCi K9K covers the bulk of the Kangoo II range: it comes in no fewer than six engine codes (K9K 700, 704, 800, 802, 808, 872), split between 5-speed gearboxes on pre-facelift versions and 6-speed gearboxes introduced progressively on higher-output variants. The same 1.5 dCi can therefore correspond to two distinct gearbox families: the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable way to determine which applies.

Petrol: K7M, D4F, K4M, H5F – four engines, four different contexts

On the petrol side, the 1.6 K4M and the 1.6 K7M share a 5-speed gearbox but do not have the same dimensions or the same internal references. The 1.2 naturally aspirated D4F (Kangoo I) and the 1.2 TCe H5F (codes H5F400 and H5F408, Kangoo II) are even further apart: the turbocharged TCe takes a 6-speed gearbox where the naturally aspirated 1.2 made do with a 5-speed. These petrol engines are found mainly in private-use versions and early light commercial variants; Kangoos used for intensive professional work switched overwhelmingly to diesel from the mid-2000s onwards.
