The Kangoo gearbox changed family depending on the generation and engine

Between 1997 and 2021, the Kangoo went through two major generations and received very different engines, which translates directly into distinct, non-interchangeable gearboxes. The 1.9 dCi (engine codes F9Q and F9Q 790) belongs to the first-generation Kangoo and comes with a 5-speed manual. The 1.5 dCi, which became the dominant engine in the second generation, is the most widely represented in the range: depending on the engine code — K9K 700, K9K 704, K9K 800, K9K 802, K9K 808 or K9K 872 — the associated gearbox is either a 5-speed or a 6-speed. These two formats are not interchangeable: the exact reference depends on the engine code, not simply on the engine capacity.

Petrol: three engines, three very different use cases

On the petrol side, three families coexist. The naturally aspirated 1.2 (engine codes D4F and D7F) was fitted to entry-level versions in the early years and uses a 5-speed manual. The 1.6 (engine codes K4M and K7M) also retains a 5-speed. The 1.2 TCe (engine codes H5F, H5F400, H5F408), a more recent turbocharged engine, moves up to a 6-speed manual — an important point to bear in mind when ordering, as the gearbox is physically different from that of the naturally aspirated 1.2 despite the identical engine capacity.

Common symptoms and points to watch on the Kangoo van

The Kangoo, widely used as a light commercial vehicle and often covering high mileages, puts its gearboxes under considerable strain. Difficult shifts in 3rd or 4th gear and synchromesh noise on upshifts are recurring symptoms on heavily worn units, particularly on the 1.5 dCi in intensive urban use. On 6-speed versions of the 1.5 dCi, 6th gear — used primarily on the open road — is less exposed to wear than the lower gears, which take the brunt of city driving. On 1.6 petrol versions, gearboxes generally offer reasonable durability but remain sensitive to neglected gearbox oil changes.
