Kangoo 1.5 dCi: 5 or 6-speed gearbox depending on the K9K engine code?

The answer lies in the engine code stamped on your block: codes K9K 700 and K9K 704 correspond to the earliest versions of the 1.5 dCi (from 2001 onwards) and are fitted with a 5-speed manual gearbox, whereas codes K9K 800, K9K 802, K9K 808 and K9K 872 are found in later generations and can be paired with either a 5 or a 6-speed, depending on the vehicle's year of first registration and trim level. Mixing up the two families is the most common mistake made on this model.

Why the K9K code alone is not always enough

Between 2001 and 2021, Renault updated the transmission of the Kangoo 1.5 dCi without systematically changing the engine code. The same K9K 802, for example, could leave the factory with either a 5-speed or a 6-speed gearbox, depending on the year of production and the power output specified. The gearbox reference — JB, JC, JH or JR depending on the family — is therefore the key factor in confirming compatibility, far more so than the engine code alone.

Key points to watch out for on the 1.5 dCi in commercial use

Because the Kangoo is used under near-constant load by many of its owners, the gearboxes on this engine are subject to accelerated synchromesh wear, particularly on 2nd and 3rd gear changes. A crunch when changing down, or resistance when selecting 1st gear from cold, are the most common symptoms indicating a gearbox that has reached the end of its life on this diesel engine.
