The answer starts with one key piece of information: the K9K engine code, stamped on the block, determines both the gearbox family and the number of ratios. On the Kangoo 1.5 dCi, six codes exist — K9K 700, 704, 800, 802, 808 and 872 — spread across two decades (2001–2021) and two distinct manual gearbox families.

5-speed or 6-speed manual: a boundary defined by the K9K generation

The early K9K variants (700, 704) fitted to the Kangoo I and early Kangoo II were paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox (JR5, JB3, JH3 families). The more recent variants — K9K 800, 802, 808 and 872 — moved to a 6-speed manual (JC5, TL4 families). These two generations are not compatible with each other: fitting a 6-speed gearbox to a 700 or 704 block is mechanically impossible. The only reliable reference point is therefore the full K9K code, not the engine capacity or the stated power output.

Known symptoms and weak points on these gearboxes

On 5-speed gearboxes in extended service, the differential and output bearings are the first components to monitor, typically indicated by a droning noise on bends or under acceleration. On TL4-type 6-speed units, 3rd and 4th gear changes can become stiff or imprecise at higher mileages, a sign of synchromesh wear.
