Which Renault gearbox matches my engine, model and year?

The answer rarely comes down to engine capacity alone: on Renault vehicles, the engine code is the primary identification criterion, and the same model may have been fitted with several gearbox variants depending on the year of production. The catalogue here covers 23 models, from the Master and the Trafic to city cars such as the Clio, the Twingo and the Captur, spanning model years from 1991 to 2024, in 5- or 6-speed manual and Quickshift.

The engine code, not the capacity: the essential starting point

The 1.5 dCi is a perfect illustration of the pitfall: the K9K family encompasses more than twenty variants — K9K 608, K9K 700, K9K 764, K9K 802, K9K 872, K9K836, K9K873, among others — not all of which were paired with the same gearbox across the Clio, Mégane, Kangoo and Scénic. Likewise, the 1.9 dCi F9Q runs to around fifteen suffixes (F9Q670, F9Q732, F9Q750, F9Q800, F9Q870…), spread across the Laguna, Mégane, Scénic and Espace depending on the generation in question. In the light commercial vehicle segment, the 2.3 dCi M9T (M9T 670 to M9T 716) is fitted to the Master and Trafic, but the gear ratios and mechanical adaptation differ between the two platforms.

The 2.0 dCi M9R (M9R692, M9R700, M9R780, M9R832, M9R855…) was fitted to the Laguna II/III, Koleos and Kadjar: same engine family, but distinct gearboxes depending on the torque transmitted and the generation. The 2.5 dCi G9U (G9U 630, G9U 720, G9U 750…) and the 2.8 dCi S9W / 8140.43 relate primarily to the heavier versions of the Master and Mascott. The 3.0 dCi ZD30 (ZD3200, ZD3202, ZD3A600) is specific to the Master and Maxity in their most powerful versions.

Petrol: fewer engine families, but frequent mix-ups on the 1.2 and 1.5

On the petrol side, the 1.2 TCe covers two quite distinct families: the D4F (naturally aspirated, older generation) and the H5F (H5F400, H5F403, H5F408, H5F412) fitted to the Clio IV, Mégane III and Captur. These two families share no gearbox. The 0.9 TCe H4B (H4B400, H4B408, H4Bt) covers the Clio, Captur and Twingo III. The 2.0 TCe F4R 872 (known as F4Rt) is the turbocharged variant of the naturally aspirated 2.0 F4R, found on the Mégane RS and Laguna III GT: the reconditioned gearbox from this engine is not interchangeable with that of the naturally aspirated 2.0. For the 1.6 K4M / K7M and 1.8 F4P / F7P units, the deciding factor remains the model year and the vehicle's trim level.

Sales options: exchange or rebuild of your own gearbox

Two sales options are available in this catalogue. The exchange option delivers a reconditioned gearbox that is immediately available. The rebuild of your own unit involves returning your original gearbox for a full reconditioning: this option is particularly suited to rare references (Avantime, Vel Satis, Talisman, Mascott) for which exchange stock may be limited. The engine code number shown on the block is the only document you need before selecting a reference.

    Frequently asked questions

How much does a reconditioned Renault gearbox cost?

The price depends on the engine and the exact reference, and is always well below the price of a new part. For an exact price for your vehicle, enter your number plate or request a free online quote.

Is this Renault gearbox compatible with my exact model?

We offer 346 references covering the main Renault models. Compatibility is checked against the engine / gearbox code: give us your number plate and we will confirm the exact gearbox for your vehicle.

What is the difference between new, used and exchange?

A used part is resold as is, with no work done. An exchange unit is an original gearbox rebuilt in our workshop, inspected and guaranteed for up to 24 months: reliability close to new, at a used-part price.

What do the warranty and delivery include?

A warranty of up to 24 months, an invoice with every part, return transport arranged for collecting your old unit, delivery throughout Europe and payment in up to 10 instalments.
