4 Land Rover models, 4 diesel engines: why off-road use makes gearbox replacement more complex

The Land Rover models covered here — Defender, Freelander, Discovery and Range Rover Evoque — share one thing in common: they are used in conditions that put the transmission under far greater strain than average. Towing, off-road driving, overloading, mixed road and track use: all of these factors accelerate wear on the synchromesh rings, selector forks and bearings. When a gearbox fails on a Defender used on a building site or a Freelander that regularly tackles rough tracks, identifying the correct part becomes an immediate priority — and this is where confusion often arises.

Four engine codes for the TD4 alone: accurate identification is critical

The entire range is 100% diesel, spanning model years 2007 to 2019. What appears straightforward on the surface conceals a more complex reality: the designation TD4 covers three distinct engine blocks depending on capacity and generation. The 2.2 TD4 (engine codes 224DT and DW12BTED4) is fitted primarily to the Freelander and the Range Rover Evoque. The 2.0 TD4 (engine codes 204DT, 204DTA, 204DTD) corresponds to a more recent generation of the Evoque. The 2.4 TD4 (engine code 244DT) is exclusive to the Defender. Finally, the 2.5 Td5 (engine code 15P) is specific to earlier generations of the Defender. Two different engine codes sharing the same TD4 badge do not give access to the same gearbox: checking the engine code stamped on the block is essential before making any selection.

5- or 6-speed manual: what the model and year determine

The gearboxes available across this range are exclusively manual, in 5 or 6 speeds depending on the model and year. The Defender, designed for intensive use, is fitted with robustly engineered gearboxes suited to high torque outputs and repeated off-road demands. The Freelander and the Evoque, being more oriented towards mixed road use, feature lighter gearboxes whose synchromesh rings show signs of wear sooner under demanding conditions. Common symptoms on these families include: difficulty selecting lower gears when cold, crunching on downshifts, and vibration in direct drive. The reconditioned gearboxes available are offered on an exchange basis or as a rebuild of the customer's own unit, depending on the model.
