Alfa Romeo Gearboxes: How Spirited Everyday Driving Changed Things Between 2005 and 2018

The 147, the GTV, the 159, the MiTo, the Giulietta, the Giulia: cars built for an engaged driving style — sometimes heavy urban use, sometimes sustained motorway miles. That kind of driving — high revs, frequent gear changes, clutches under constant load — accelerates wear on synchromesh rings and selector forks. On a city car like the MiTo or a Giulietta used daily in town, a 5- or 6-speed manual gearbox can absorb hundreds of gear changes a day; on a 159 or a GTV used more on open roads, it is the precision of the gear change that deteriorates first. Replacing the gearbox with a reconditioned unit is therefore often necessary before the engine shows the slightest sign of weakness.

A 1.4 and Engine Codes That Don't All Mean the Same Gearbox

The most common pitfall with this range concerns the 1.4: this engine alone covers no fewer than eight distinct engine codes — 198A4.000, 199A6.000, 199A8.000, 350A1.000, 940A2.000, 955A1.000, 955A7.000, 955B1.000 — spread across several models (MiTo, Giulietta, 147) and several years. These codes do not all correspond to the same gearbox. The 1.4 T-Jet, for its part, carries the codes 198A4000 and 199A8000, which are distinct from the naturally aspirated variants. The same logic applies to the 1.9 JTDm with codes 937A3000, 937A5000, 939A2000: one diesel engine capacity, three codes, potentially three different parts. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference for identifying the correct part.

Diesel, Petrol, TwinAir: Different Engine Families, Different Demands

The 0.9 TwinAir (199B6000) fitted to the MiTo and Giulietta transmits an uneven torque output inherent to its twin-cylinder turbo design; the associated gearbox absorbs jolts that conventional four-cylinder units never produce. The diesel blocks 2.0 JTDm (940A4.000 / 940A5.000) and 2.2 JTDm (55271838), the latter exclusive to the Giulia, develop higher torque that places different demands on shafts and bearings. The 2.2 JTS (939A5.000) and the 3.2 (AR16105), fitted to the 159 and GTV, drive 6-speed gearboxes suited to the more progressive torque delivery of petrol engines. These structural differences make any cross-family substitution impossible, even when external dimensions appear similar.
