Alfa Romeo Gearboxes from 2005 to 2018: When the Brand's Sporting Heritage Complicates Identification

Alfa Romeo models from this generation cover very different uses: the MiTo and the 147 are city cars used daily in urban conditions, the Giulietta and the 159 are family saloons frequently driven on faster roads, while the GTV and the Giulia are aimed at a distinctly more sporting style of driving. These different usage profiles translate into highly variable mechanical demands on the gearbox — synchroniser wear on city cars driven in stop-start conditions, fork fatigue on the sportier variants — and directly influence the choice of replacement part.

Petrol Engines Not to Mix Up: TwinAir, T-Jet and the 1.2 Question

On the petrol side, two engine families power the majority of the vehicles covered here. The 0.9 TwinAir (875 cm³, code 199B6000) is fitted to the MiTo from 2011 onwards and uses a specific gearbox that must not be swapped with that of the 1.4 (1368 cm³, codes 198A4000, 955A2000, 198A1000, 940B7000, 199A6000, 199A8000), which powers the MiTo, Giulietta and 147. These two engines do not share the same gearbox, and confusion is common: there is no 1.2 petrol engine on the MiTo, despite what generic databases sometimes suggest. Only the engine code stamped on the manufacturer's plate allows a reliable identification.

Diesel: JTDm 1.6, 1.9, 2.0 and 2.2 — Four Families, Four Gearboxes

Diesel engines account for the majority of this range. The 1.9 JTDm (code 939A2000) is fitted to the 159 and the Giulietta, the 1.6 JTDm (codes 940A2.000, 940A3.000, 940A4.000, 940A5.000) to the MiTo and the Giulietta, the 2.0 JTDm (codes 955A1.000, 955A3.000, 955A7.000, 955B1.000) to the Giulietta and the Giulia, and the 2.2 JTDm (internal reference 55271838) to the Giulia only. Despite their similar capacities, these engines have never shared a common gearbox: the power output, torque and bellhousing design differ enough to make any cross-family swap impossible. On the MiTo diesel in particular, the same 1.6 engine could be paired with gearboxes of different ratios depending on the power variant (95 or 105 hp), which means you must check the original gearbox reference — visible on the label affixed to the bellhousing — before placing any order.

The entire catalogue covers manual gearboxes exclusively, in 5 or 6 speeds depending on the model and engine. Two purchase options are available: exchange and rebuilding your own unit, the latter allowing you to get your own gearbox back after reconditioning — particularly useful when the reference is hard to find, as is often the case on the GTV or 147.
