Alfa Romeo MiTo 2008 to 2018: 5-speed manual on the 1.2, 6-speed manual on everything else

First point of guidance: the MiTo was never sold with an automatic or automated manual gearbox. Every transmission available on this model is manual, and reconditioning the original unit makes sense when the vehicle's gearbox is in a sufficient condition to be reconditioned — avoiding the need to track down a compatible replacement on a market where certain references, particularly for the 1.6 JTDm or the 0.9 TwinAir, are hard to come by.

What the engine code actually changes

The 1.2 petrol is the only engine paired with a 5-speed manual. Please note: no 1.2 petrol engine ever truly existed on the MiTo in any industrial sense — the actual petrol engines are the 1.4 (1,368 cm³), covered by engine codes 198A4000, 955A2000, 198A1000, 940B7000 or 199A6000, and the 0.9 TwinAir (875 cm³), engine code 199B6000. Both families use a 6-speed manual, but their gearboxes are not the same: checking the exact code stamped on the engine is essential before placing any order.

Diesel and parts availability

The 1.6 JTDm is the only diesel in the MiTo range; it uses a specific 6-speed manual gearbox. This engine is known for dual-mass flywheel and clutch fork issues, which often accelerates gearbox failure through repeated juddering. The availability of reconditioned gearboxes for this powertrain is more limited than for the petrol units, making reconditioning the existing unit particularly worthwhile when the casing and shafts are in good condition.
