Alfa Romeo Mito: 5- or 6-speed gearbox, and why does the 1.4 cover so many engine codes?

The Mito is fitted with a 5-speed manual gearbox only on the 1.2; all other engines — petrol and diesel alike — come with a 6-speed manual. With that settled, the real identification challenge concerns the naturally aspirated 1.4: this designation alone covers seven distinct engine codes (198A4.000, 199A6.000, 199A8.000, 350A1.000, 940A2.000, 955A1.000, 955A7.000, 955B1.000), which do not necessarily correspond to the same gearbox.

Petrol: TwinAir, T-Jet and 1.4 — very different engines under the same bodywork

The 0.9 TwinAir (199B6000) is a twin-cylinder turbo with variable valve timing, with no mechanical connection to the four-cylinder units in the range. The 1.4 T-Jet exists under two codes (198A4000, 199A8000) and shares its designation with certain codes of the naturally aspirated 1.4, but the blocks and associated gearboxes differ. Checking the physical engine code before ordering is therefore essential: engine capacity alone cannot distinguish a T-Jet from a naturally aspirated 1.4.

Diesel: the 1.6 JTDm — one code, one gearbox

The 1.6 JTDm (955A3000) is the Mito's diesel engine, produced from 2008 to 2018. Identification is more straightforward than on the petrol side: a single engine code, a 6-speed manual gearbox. The most common symptoms in this family are difficulty selecting gears and oil seal leaks caused by ageing gaskets, often made worse by neglected gearbox oil changes.
