6 types of Peugeot gearbox: why the same engine doesn't always get the same gearbox

On the 1.6 HDi, engine codes range from 9HC to 9HZ, taking in 9HP, 9HR, 9HU, 9HW and 9HX along the way — each one potentially corresponding to a different gearbox depending on the model and generation of the vehicle. A 307, a 308, a Partner or an Expert may share the same engine capacity without sharing the same transmission. It is the engine code stamped on the block, not the engine capacity alone, that determines the compatible part.

Standard manuals, BMP6 and ETG6 automated gearboxes: the families to tell apart

The collection covers 5- and 6-speed manual gearboxes, as well as three families of automated manual gearbox: the BMP6 (6-speed, fitted notably to the 308, 3008 and 5008 in both petrol and diesel), the 2-Tronic / BMP5 (5-speed, found on the 207 and 1007) and the ETG6 (6-speed, used on the 208 and 2008 with the 1.2 PureTech among others). These automated gearboxes are sold without the actuator or robot unit: only the mechanical gearbox itself is included.

The BMP6 is known for premature wear of forks and synchronisers, symptoms frequently reported on high-mileage vehicles. The ETG6, found on the smaller PureTech engines, has known weaknesses with the actuator — but it is the mechanical gearbox that is offered here in reconditioned form.

The collection spans 1991 to 2025 and covers 27 models, from the compact 106 to the heavy-duty Boxer and Expert vans. On the commercial vehicles, the HDi 2.2 (codes 4HG, 4HH, 4HN, 4HS, 4HT, 4HU, 4HV, 4HW) and HDi 2.5 (codes T8A, T9A, THX) drive specific gearboxes that are distinct from those used in passenger cars. On saloons and hatchbacks, the 2.0 HDi alone encompasses more than twenty different engine codes — from RHE to RHZ — including several DW10 variants that do not take the same gearbox. Before placing any order, checking the engine code is essential, regardless of the engine shown on the registration document.
