308 from 2007 to 2021: knowing whether exchange or reconstruction is the right route before you order

With the 308, there are two scenarios. Either the gearbox you need is in stock and an exchange is the straightforward route. Or the reference is hard to come by — as is often the case with certain 1.6 THP units or early-year 2.0 HDi models — and rebuilding the unit you already have becomes the only realistic option. This is not a matter of preference: it is a question of availability, and that depends entirely on the engine.

1.6 HDi, 1.6 THP, 2.0 HDi: 5- or 6-speed gearboxes depending on the engine code

The 1.6 HDi (engine codes 9HZ, 9HR, 9HP, 9HD} is the most common engine in this range, with one clear distinction: early-year models came with a 5-speed manual gearbox, while later versions moved to 6 speeds. These two gearboxes are not physically interchangeable, and the engine code stamped on the block remains the definitive identification reference. The 1.6 THP (engine codes 5FT, 5FV, 5FX} is fitted exclusively with a 6-speed gearbox, as is the 2.0 HDi (DW10BTED4, DW10CTED4), a less common engine on the 308 for which reconstruction of the customer's own unit is more frequently requested.

308 phase 2 and newer engines: 1.2 PureTech and 1.5 HDi

Versions produced after the model's facelift introduced two distinct engine families. The 1.2 PureTech covers engine codes EB2DT and EB2DTS and is available only with a 6-speed gearbox on this generation. The 1.5 HDi (engine codes YHZ and YH01} follows the same configuration. Not to be confused with the naturally aspirated 1.2 and 1.6 units (engine codes HN01, HNZ for the 1.2; EP6, EP6C, EP6CDT, EP6DT for the 1.6), which correspond to 5-speed gearboxes and different mechanical architectures. On the 308, the registration year combined with the engine code is the only reliable reference for avoiding ordering errors.
