206 1.6 in 5-speed or 6-speed: same engine, two gearboxes that cannot be swapped for one another

On the Peugeot 206, engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the correct gearbox. The 1.6 petrol — engine codes NFU (TU5JP4) or NFZ (TU5JP) — comes with a 5-speed manual, whereas the 1.6 HDi (code 9HZ / DV6TED4) is paired with a 6-speed manual. Same engine capacity, different gearbox families, different bellhousing. The engine code stamped on the block is therefore the essential starting point before placing any order.

Diesel 5-speed, diesel 6-speed: where the line is drawn

Not all diesel engines in the 206 share the same gearbox. The 1.4 HDi (8HX / 8HZ) and the 1.9 HDi are fitted with a 5-speed manual. Only the 1.6 HDi moves up to 6 speeds. On the petrol side, the 1.4 (KFW, KFX / TU3JP) and the 2.0 (RFN / EW10J4, RFK / EW10J4S) remain 5-speed, but with bellhousing configurations and final-drive ratios specific to each engine. Catalogue references — for example 20CP91, 20EA60 or 20DM27 — reflect these differences: two outwardly similar gearboxes can have incompatible internal ratios.

Rebuilding the original unit or exchange: two approaches depending on the condition of the casing

The range covers the 206 from 1998 to 2012. Depending on the condition of the casing and the input shaft, two options are available: exchange, where a reconditioned unit is dispatched straight away, or a rebuild carried out on the gearbox supplied by the customer, which is then returned to them. This second option may be the right choice when the casing carries a specific reference or marking that is difficult to source elsewhere — particularly on the less common 2.0 16v versions with engine code RFK.
