On the Peugeot 206, the gearbox is one of the components that fails most frequently, and the symptoms are well documented. Stiff or impossible gear changes — often reported on the 1.4 petrol when cold — are generally a sign of worn synchromesh rings, particularly on 2nd and 3rd gear. On diesel versions, notably the 1.6 HDi (9HZ), the 6-speed manual gearbox can develop characteristic bearing noise caused by worn bearings. The 1.9 HDi (WJY, WJZ), one of the older engines in the 206 range, is frequently associated with high-mileage gearboxes: deterioration of the internal differential is a well-known point to watch. In all these cases, repairing the original gearbox does not always provide a lasting solution when several internal components have failed at the same time.

Identifying your gearbox precisely using the engine code

The 206 spans 1998 to 2012 with six distinct engines, all fitted with manual gearboxes — 5-speed in the main, 6-speed only on the 1.6 HDi. The engine code stamped on the block remains the most reliable means of identification. On the 1.4 petrol, codes KFW and KFX (TU3JP) do not take the same gearbox (see the dedicated 1.4 page). On the 1.6 petrol, NFU (TU5JP4) and NFZ (TU5JP) correspond to variants that need to be checked. On the 2.0 petrol, RFN (EW10J4) and RFK (EW10J4S) refer to two different blocks. On the 1.4 HDi side, codes 8HX (DV4TD) and 8HZ (DV4TD) share the same engine family but may correspond to different gearboxes depending on the exact reference. Using engine capacity alone to select a gearbox is a common mistake on this model.

Two options for the part: depending on the condition of your original gearbox

Depending on the condition of the gearbox removed, two options are available: exchange (the reconditioned gearbox is dispatched and the old unit is collected) or reconditioning of your own gearbox, where your original unit is reconditioned and returned to you. This second option may be the right choice when the original gearbox has a sound casing but failed internal components, or when the exact reference is difficult to source on the market.
