307: 11 engine codes for a single gearbox family – and that's where things get complicated

The Peugeot 307 (2001–2008) was fitted with just one type of transmission: the 5-speed manual. But behind this apparent uniformity lie no fewer than 11 registered engine codes — from 9HX to RFN (EW10J4), taking in NFU (TU5JP4), RHR, RHS, RHY and RFJ — and the gearboxes associated with them are not all physically identical. Fitting a replacement without checking the code stamped on the engine is the single most common cause of ordering errors on this model.

Symptoms and well-known weak points on 307 gearboxes

307 gearboxes are known for two recurring faults. On the 1.6 HDi variants (codes 9HX, 9HY, 9HZ), the internal differential and gearbox bearings are the first components to suffer, typically flagged by a dull rumble when cornering or accelerating. On the 2.0 16V petrol (RFN / EW10J4), the gear-change mechanism deteriorates first: difficulty engaging 1st or 2nd, and hesitant shifts. In both cases, leaving the problem too long worsens secondary damage to the casing and synchromesh rings, which directly affects whether a rebuild is feasible.

Diesel or petrol: similar gearboxes, but not interchangeable

The 307 1.6 HDi and 2.0 HDi models were fitted with gearboxes designed to handle diesel torque, with different final-drive ratios from their petrol equivalents. A gearbox from a 2.0 petrol cannot replace the one from a 2.0 HDi, even if the mechanical footprint looks similar. The engine code remains the only reliable reference for matching the correct part.
