6 engine variants, one recurring weakness: the 307's gearboxes rarely fail without warning

On the 307 (2001–2008), the 5-speed manual gearboxes share a common trait: failure is almost always preceded by warning signs. On the diesel side, the 1.6 HDi and 2.0 HDi have well-documented cases of stiff or refused gear changes, often caused by wear to the 3rd/4th gear fork or deterioration of the synchromesh rings. On the petrol side, the 2.0 16V (EW10J4 block) is more prone to bearing noise under load. In both cases, the symptoms develop gradually before the gearbox becomes unusable: a grinding sensation when changing down, a gear jumping out under torque, or a vibration in gear. Leaving it too long generally makes the damage to the gearbox itself worse.

Identifying the correct gearbox by engine variant and engine code

The 307 covers six distinct engine variants, and engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the right gearbox. For the 1.6 petrol, only the NFU (TU5JP4) code is referenced. For the 2.0 petrol, three codes exist: RFJ, RFN and EW10J4 — the last of which also appears as RFN (EW10J4) in manufacturer documentation. For the 2.0 HDi, the codes RHR, RHS and RHY correspond to different power variants that do not necessarily take the same gearbox. The engine code stamped on the block is therefore the essential starting point before placing any order.
