307 diesel engines: before 2006, timing failures were sounding the alarm

On the Peugeot 307 diesel produced between 2004 and 2008, workshop reports point to two distinct families of problems depending on engine capacity. On the 1.6 HDi side, first-generation blocks — engine codes 9HX, 9HW and DV6ATED4 — were associated with premature timing belt wear, with failures capable of causing internal engine destruction. Later versions, codes 9H02, DV6BTED4 and DV6TED4_9HY, share the same DV6 architecture but feature internal revisions. Identifying the code stamped on the block is therefore essential before placing any order: two 307 1.6 HDi of the same year can take different engines.

The 1.4 HDi: a different family, different symptoms

The 1.4 HDi is based on a distinct architecture, with four engine codes referenced within this range: 8HR, 8HZ, F6JA and F6JB. These blocks are considered less prone to catastrophic timing failures, but they age poorly under heavy urban use: EGR valve clogging affecting the block, and progressive oil consumption. When the engine is too far gone for a partial repair, replacement with a reconditioned bare engine is the only option.
