Peugeot 307 diesel engines: what changed between 2004 and 2008

On the 307 diesel from this period, engine failures follow well-documented patterns. The 1.6 HDi (families DV6TED4, DV6BTED4, DV6ATED4, codes 9HY, 9HX, 9HW, 9H02) is prone to cylinder head problems caused by overheating, often the result of a cooling system failure that went undetected for too long. Loss of compression, abnormal oil consumption and persistent blue smoke are the most common signs that the block is at the end of its life on this engine. The 1.4 HDi (codes F6JB, F6JA, 8HZ, 8HR) is mechanically simpler but susceptible to clogging and turbo problems linked to irregular servicing, which can lead to premature piston ring wear.

Identifying the correct engine code

Between 2004 and 2008, the 1.6 HDi underwent several internal revisions: codes 9HY, 9HX, 9HW and 9H02 correspond to distinct variants (power output, emissions standard, injection system) that are not all directly interchangeable. Before placing any order, the engine code stamped on the block — not just the engine capacity — is the only reliable reference for confirming compatibility. The manufacturer's plate or the service book can also provide this information. The same care applies to the 1.4 HDi: 8HZ and 8HR denote two different power variants (68 and 75 hp) fitted depending on the year and trim level.
