Peugeot 3008 Engine: two generations, six engines, one engine code to identify the right one

The 3008 spans two distinct generations (2009–2016, then 2016–2023) and six engines — 2.0 HDi, 1.2 PureTech, 1.5 BlueHDi 130, 2.0 BlueHDi 180, 1.6 THP, 1.6 VTi — several of which share the same engine capacity without sharing the same block. A first-generation 2.0 HDi and a second-generation 2.0 BlueHDi 180 have no parts in common: the commercial designation alone is not enough to identify the engine. The engine code stamped on the block — from the references DW10FC_AHW, UFDB, UFDA, TXWA, RH02 for diesel, and EB2FDTS_HNY, EB2DTS_HNY, 5FV, 5F02, AHZ for petrol — is the only reliable starting point.

Exchange or rebuild: what guides the choice

For most engines, the unit is available on an exchange basis: the reconditioned block is dispatched and the old one is returned. Certain references are also offered as a rebuilt to 0 km unit, which represents a more thorough level of reconditioning. Rebuilding your own block makes sense in two specific situations: when your engine has localised damage but the casing and key machined surfaces are sound, or when the engine variant is rare — this is notably the case with the 1.5 BlueHDi 130 (DV5RC / YHZ) and the 2.0 BlueHDi 180, for which the number of references held in stock is more limited than for the 2.0 HDi — by far the most represented engine in the range, with five distinct variants.

Key points by engine family

The DW10 (2.0 HDi) blocks are known for EGR valve and blocked turbo issues, which are often mistaken for an internal engine failure: check these ancillary components before concluding that the block itself has failed. The EB2 (1.2 PureTech) — codes EB2FDTS and EB2DTS — are affected on certain production runs by premature timing chain wear, a characteristic symptom that appears before any internal mechanical failure. The 1.6 THP (5FV / 5F02) shares this timing chain weakness and is additionally prone to oil dilution by petrol on direct-injection versions. The 1.6 VTi (AHZ) is structurally simpler and less susceptible to these faults.
