Peugeot 3008 Engine: two generations, two engine families, one choice between exchange and rebuild

The 3008 spans production from 2009 to 2023 across two distinct generations, which directly determines which engine you need to source. On the first generation, the 2.0 HDi blocks account for the bulk of available stock, with six engine code variants — AHR, AHZ, RH02, TXWA, UFDA, UFDB — not all of which are interchangeable. On the second generation, the engines move towards the BlueHDi family (1.5, 1.6 and 2.0) on the diesel side, and the 1.2 PureTech on the petrol side, with codes EB2DTS_HNY and EB2FDTS_HNY corresponding to two variants of the same three-cylinder block. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference for avoiding mix-ups between closely related part numbers.

Exchange or rebuild: what guides the decision on this model

The majority of 3008 engines are available on an exchange basis — the customer sends back their worn unit in return. Having your own unit rebuilt, on the other hand, makes particular sense when the block has a mechanical characteristic tied to its history (modifications, specific ancillaries, or a reference that has become scarce on the second-hand market). This is especially relevant for certain variants of the first-generation 2.0 HDi, where several engine codes — TXWA, UFDA, UFDB — correspond to uncommon production evolutions. For these references, having your own block simplifies identification and ensures consistency throughout the rebuild.

Identification points to check by engine type

On the diesel side, the 1.5 BlueHDi 130 (DV5RC / YHZ) and the 1.6 BlueHDi 120 (DV6FC / BHZ) are two distinct blocks despite their similar engine capacity: one is a new-generation four-cylinder, the other belongs to an earlier family. The 2.0 BlueHDi 180 (DW10FC_AHW) and the 2.0 HDi 150 (DW10CTED4 RHE) share a common architecture but differ in their calibration and specification level. On the petrol side, the 1.6 THP (5FV) and the 1.6 VTi (5F02) are two entirely different designs — the THP is turbocharged whereas the VTi is naturally aspirated — and confusing the two during identification is common when relying on engine capacity alone.
