Boxer diesel from 1.9 TD to 3.0 HDi: before and after 2011, two generations of engines that share no parts

On the Boxer, the engine capacity shown first in the commercial designation is only a starting point. The real question is which generation the engine belongs to. The clearest changeover came around 2011, when the 2.2 HDi units from the DW12RUD / DW12RUC family replaced the earlier variants, and the BlueHDi engines (4HK, 4HH, 10DYZZ) appeared for the post-2014 phase. A Boxer 2.2 HDi registered in 2008 and another registered in 2017 may show the same engine capacity and the same power output: the engines are entirely different and cannot be substituted for one another.

Exchange or rebuild: when each option makes sense

The two purchasing options available here suit different situations. Exchange is the right choice when the engine code matches a unit that is well represented in our catalogue — the 2.2 HDi family alone accounts for the vast majority of references, with codes such as CYFA, CYFF, DRFA, DRFB, DRFC, SRFA, SRFB, UHFA, UHFB and also DW12RUC, DW12RUD, DW12RUE. Rebuilding your own engine — where your unit is reconditioned and returned to you — makes the most sense for low-volume engines: the 1.9 TD (D8C / XUD9UTF), the 3.0 HDi 160 (F1CE0481D / F30DT) and the 2.0 BlueHDi (10DYZZ) are all cases where having a correctly identified original unit reduces the risk of incompatibility.

Check the engine code first

Across the Boxer models covered here (2006–2021), ten distinct engines are represented and the catalogue lists more than forty engine codes. Two engines sharing the same commercial designation — for example 2.2 HDi 140 and 2.2 BlueHDi 140 — share the code DW12RUD but differ in their emissions context (Euro standard). Conversely, the generic 2.2 HDi designation alone covers codes as varied as 4HG, 4HJ, 4HM, 4HU, CY14, CVF5, P8FA, P8FB, PGFA, QVFA, QWFA. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference for confirming an exact match.
