Peugeot Boxer Engine: before and after 2011, two generations of blocks that share neither codes nor parts

On the diesel Boxer from 2006 to 2021, the engine designation shown on the registration document — 2.0 HDi, 2.2 HDi or 2.2 BlueHDi — is not enough to identify the correct block for your vehicle. It is the engine code stamped on the block that gives the definitive answer: the range covers more than forty distinct codes, including the DW10 (2.0 HDi and 2.0 BlueHDi), DW12 and 22DT (2.2 HDi and 2.2 BlueHDi) families, with variants such as 4HU, 4HH, 4HG, 4HM, CYFA, DRFA and UHFA corresponding to different power outputs, emissions standards or model years. A 2.2 HDi from 2007 with code 4HU and a 2.2 HDi from 2014 with code CYFA are not interchangeable.

The switch to BlueHDi: a technical break not to be overlooked

The move to BlueHDi engines (2.2 BlueHDi 120 and 2.0 BlueHDi) introduced blocks designed to work with an SCR AdBlue system. The codes SRFA, SRFB, PGFA, QVFA and QWFA belong to this post-2015 generation and are distinct from earlier HDi blocks, even where the engine capacity is the same. Mixing up the two families when placing an order will invariably result in an incompatibility.

Exchange or rebuilding your own block: what guides the choice on a light commercial vehicle

The range is available in two forms. For the majority of common codes — particularly the most widely used 2.2 HDi variants — a reconditioned engine on an exchange basis is available. Rebuilding the customer's own block makes most sense for rare codes or high-mileage Boxers where the owner wishes to retain the original serial number: this is common on professional light commercial vehicles subject to strict fleet maintenance records, or where the block has a single, localised failure on an internal component. In every case, the full engine code — not just the engine capacity — is the essential piece of information before taking any further steps.
