Over this fifteen-year span, the Boxer's 2.2 HDi passed through two major engine families — the 4H (4HU, 4HM, 4HJ, 4HG, 4H03) carried over from the first generation, and the DW12 / CYF / DRF / CVF that define the second. The two families share neither internal architecture nor ancillary components; an incorrect engine code will invariably result in the wrong part. This is precisely where the choice between the two purchasing options available makes sense: when a unit is rare, or its code belongs to a low-volume sub-series — certain late CYF or DRF codes, for example — having your own unit rebuilt avoids the wait associated with sourcing an equivalent exchange unit.

The Boxer 2.2 HDi features up to thirty-six distinct codes referenced in this collection, from the RHV of the early years to the UHFA / UHFB of the most recent model years. A single production year may cover several codes depending on power output (100, 110, 120, 130 or 150 hp) and emissions standard (Euro 4, 5 or 6). The code is stamped directly on the block; it is the only identifier that removes all ambiguity, including between two apparently identical Boxers built in the same year.

Key points to watch on 4H and DW12 blocks

The 4HU and 4HJ blocks are known for cylinder head cracking caused by the intense thermal cycling typical of heavy commercial use (frequent loading, long distances). Euro 5 and Euro 6 generation DW12 units — codes CYF5, CYFA to CYFG, DRF5 to DRFF — feature a crankshaft and bearings of a different size; no internal component is transferable between the two families.
