Petrol or diesel, 1.0 or 1.6: which engine family powers your 208?

The Peugeot 208 (2012–2024) covers a wider range of engines than it might appear: seven petrol variants and a single diesel, spread across three distinct engine families. On the petrol side, the three-cylinder PureTech units (1.0 and 1.2) have progressively replaced the older four-cylinder VTi engines (1.2 VTi 82 and 1.4 VTi), while the 1.6 THP stands apart as a more mechanically demanding unit. On the diesel side, the 1.5 BlueHDi (code YHZ) is the only diesel engine in the range. These families share no interchangeable parts: identifying the correct one starts with the engine code stamped on the block, not the engine capacity.

The petrol families: four-cylinder VTi, three-cylinder PureTech, THP

The 1.4 VTi encompasses five distinct codes (8F01, 8FN, 8FP, 8FR, EP3C), making it the most fragmented engine in this guide — the same 1.4 can therefore correspond to different variants depending on the year and trim level. The 1.2 VTi 82 (EB2F / HMZ) is also a four-cylinder unit and should not be confused with the 1.2 PureTech engines, which are three-cylinder units. These come in three power outputs: the entry-level 1.2 PureTech (EB2_HMZ), the 1.2 PureTech (THP) 110 (EB2DT / HNZ, turbocharged) and the 1.2 PureTech 130 (EB2ADTS_HNS). The 1.0 PureTech (EB0_ZMZ or ZM01) is the smallest in the range and is naturally aspirated. The 1.6 THP (EP6CDTX_5FU) is the most powerful and most thermally stressed unit in the range; it is known for timing chain issues on certain generations.

Identification checks before placing an order

Two engines share the same 1.2 capacity but belong to entirely different architectures: the 1.2 VTi 82 is a naturally aspirated four-cylinder, while the 1.2 PureTech units are three-cylinders, available with or without a turbo. The engine code is the only way to remove any ambiguity. For the 1.4 VTi, five codes exist side by side: check which one appears on your block before taking any further steps. The 1.5 BlueHDi, the only diesel in this range, is available solely under the code YHZ — no additional diesel variants exist within this scope.
