Reconditioned Peugeot 208 Gearbox

Two generations of the 208, six engine variants, three gearbox types: twelve years of coverage from 2012 to 2024

The Peugeot 208 has spanned two distinct generations since 2012, and that longevity has resulted in a genuine stratification of gearboxes. The earliest 208s inherited transmissions from the PF1 platform — 5-speed manual gearboxes paired with the naturally aspirated 1.2 (engine codes EB2ADTD, HMZ), the 1.6 HDi (engine codes 9H06, 9HD, 9HP, 9HR) and the 1.4 HDi (engine codes 8HR, DV4C), as well as the BMP5 on the latter. From the mid-decade onwards and into the second generation, the 6-speed became the norm: the 1.2 PureTech (engine codes EB2ADTS, EB2DT, EB2DTS, EB2F), the 1.5 HDi (engine code DV5RC (YH01)) and the 1.6 THP (engine codes EP6CDT, EP6CDTX, EP6DT, EP6FDTX) all received a 6-speed manual gearbox.

The 1.5 HDi pitfall: 5 or 6 speeds depending on the year

The 1.5 HDi is the only engine to span both formats: it can be fitted with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed manual depending on the production period. These two gearboxes are not mechanically interchangeable. The engine code DV5RC (YH01) is therefore not sufficient to identify the correct unit: the year and exact vehicle configuration remain essential to tell the two apart.

BMP5: a standalone automated gearbox

The BMP5, found exclusively on the 1.4 HDi, is an automated manual gearbox with an electrohydraulic actuator. It is sold without its robot unit or actuator. This is a structural point: the actuator, which is external to the mechanical gearbox, is not included in the reconditioned unit. No such particularity applies to the 5-speed or 6-speed manual gearboxes. Two purchasing options are available across the entire 208 range: exchange and customer unit rebuild.
