208 from 2012 to 2024: three gearbox families for seventeen engine codes

The Peugeot 208 spans twelve years of production across two distinct generations. Between 2012 and 2019, the first generation was fitted predominantly with 5-speed manual gearboxes on the 1.6 HDi and 1.4 HDi diesels (codes 9HP, 9H06, 9HD, 9HR, DV4C) as well as on the small 1.2 petrol. From 2019 onwards, the second generation introduced the 1.5 HDi (DV5RC / YH01) and the PureTech 1.2 (EB2F, EB2DT, EB2DTS, EB2ADTS, EB2ADTD), which receive either a 5- or 6-speed manual depending on power output and configuration. The 1.6 THP (EP6DT, EP6CDT, EP6FDTX, EP6CDTX) also moved to 6 speeds. The BMP5 is confined to the first-generation 1.4 HDi (8HR, HMZ): it is an automated manual gearbox with a separate actuator, sold without the robot unit.

Why the year and engine code make all the difference

A 2019 1.5 HDi and a 2015 1.6 HDi do not take the same gearbox, even though their engine capacities are similar. Likewise, the PureTech 1.2 comes in several codes (EB2F without turbo, EB2DT and turbocharged variants) that do not share the same casing. The only reliable reference is the engine code stamped on the block, combined with the model year: two 208s that look identical can require incompatible gearboxes if they belong to different model years.

Known weak points on these engines

On the PureTech EB2, head gasket leaks can, if left unaddressed, allow coolant to reach the clutch and accelerate synchroniser wear. On the 1.6 HDi 9HP/9HR, ageing 5-speed gearboxes sometimes exhibit difficulty engaging first gear and reverse when cold, a sign of fork wear. These symptoms point towards gearbox replacement rather than a straightforward clutch repair.
