Peugeot 106 (1991–2003): 3 engine variants, one gearbox family — but not the same engine codes

On the 106, the question of manual / automatic / automated gearbox simply doesn't arise: every engine in the range is paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual gearbox. What genuinely sets the parts apart is the original engine type — petrol or diesel — and, within each engine capacity, the engine code stamped on the block.

1.6 and 1.4 petrol: two TU families, two sets of codes

The 1.6 petrol can be identified by the codes NFX (TU5J4) or NFY (TU5J2). The 1.4 petrol, for its part, uses the codes KFW (TU3JP) or KFX. These four codes all belong to the TU family, but the internal ratios and casings differ depending on the code: always check the engine code before ordering to avoid compatibility errors.

1.5 HDi: three codes for the only diesel in the range

The 1.5 HDi, the sole diesel engine in the 106 range, comes in three distinct engine codes: VJX (TUD5 / TUD5B), VJY and VJZ. The associated gearbox remains a 5-speed manual, but it is not automatically interchangeable with those from the petrol versions, even where the ratios appear identical. The engine code is the only reliable means of identification here — the manufacturer's plate or the V5C registration document alone is not sufficient.

The parts in this collection are available either as a rebuild on your own gearbox or on an exchange basis, depending on the condition of the original unit and the engine concerned.
