Peugeot 306 Gearbox: how did it evolve from the 1993 launch to the end of production in 2002?

Over nine years in production, the 306 went through several layers of engine options, not all of which shared the same transmissions. The early years of the model relied on petrol XU units — the 1.6 NFZ and the 2.0 in 8-valve (RFX / XU10J2C) and 16-valve (RFY / XU10J4, abbreviated here as 8v and 16v) — and on the 1.9 D naturally aspirated diesel with its codes D9B, DHW, DHX and XUD9A. These four 1.9 D codes represent successive developments of the same XUD unit: they are not mechanically equivalent, and the associated gearbox may differ depending on the exact variant. All of these transmissions are 5-speed manuals.

The HDi turning point late in the model's life: two references not to be confused

From the second half of the 1990s, the 2.0 HDi arrived with the DW10TD unit, code RHY (DW10TD). A restricted 90 hp variant carries the same code RHY but appears in the catalogue under the designation 2.0 HDI 90: although the engine code is identical, differences in engine mapping and transmitted torque may mean different gearbox references are required. Checking the vehicle's exact power output is therefore essential before identifying the correct gearbox.

The 2.0 petrol: the only engine to offer a 6-speed gearbox

The 2.0 petrol is the only engine in the 306 range for which a 6-speed manual is available, alongside the 5-speed. This applies to the most powerful versions (16v), often fitted in the S16 sporting trim levels or in the later phase of the model. For all other engines — 1.6, 1.9 D and 2.0 HDi — only the 5-speed is listed in this collection. Two reconditioning options are available depending on the condition and origin of the unit: rebuilding the customer's own gearbox, which is then returned to them, or supplying a reconditioned unit as a direct replacement.
