On the Boxer, it is the engine code stamped on the block — not the engine capacity alone — that determines the compatible gearbox. Six diesel engines succeeded one another between 1994 and 2021, each with its own codes: 4HG, 4HH, 4HU, 4HV for the 2.2 HDi; AH03, AHN for the 2.0 HDi; T8A, T9A, THX for the 2.5 HDi from 1994 to 2002; F1CE0481D, F1CE3481E, F30DT for the 3.0 HDi; 8140.43S, F28DTCR for the 2.8 HDi; D8A, D9B, DJY for the 1.9 HDi. At the same engine capacity, two distinct codes can correspond to different gearboxes: this is particularly true of the 2.2 HDi, where the 5-speed manual and the 6-speed manual coexist depending on the generation and the exact code.

5-speed or 6-speed manual: which engine gets which

Every engine in this collection is fitted with a manual gearbox — there are no automatic or automated manual versions. The 6-speed manual is fitted to the 3.0 HDi and to some variants of the 2.2 HDi and 2.0 HDi. The older generations — 2.5 HDi, 2.8 HDi and 1.9 HDi — are exclusively fitted with a 5-speed manual. The 2.2 HDi is the only engine where both configurations exist: checking the engine code is therefore essential before placing any order for this engine.

Key points to watch depending on vehicle use

The Boxer is widely used as a panel van, ambulance or motorhome, which subjects the gearbox to high and repeated torque loads. The most common symptoms of gearbox failure on these units — difficulty selecting lower gears, noise in reverse, oil pan leak — typically appear after intensive use in urban environments or on routes with significant gradients.
