Peugeot Boxer Gearboxes: from 1994 to 2021, the engine code is the essential starting point

On the Boxer, the engine code stamped on the block directly determines which gearbox was fitted as standard. Between 1994 and 2021, six diesel engine capacities were used — from the 1.9 HDi to the 3.0 HDi — and each one uses one or more gearbox families that are not interchangeable with one another. The D9B and the DJY cover the 1.9 HDi and 2.0 HDi of the early generations (from 1994 onwards) with 5-speed gearboxes. The 8140.43S and the D8A correspond to the 2.5 HDi and 2.8 HDi, also with 5-speed gearboxes. The T9A and the T8A identify the 2.8 HDi of the intermediate phase. The codes F1CE0481D, F1CE3481E and F30DT refer to the 3.0 HDi, which is exclusively fitted with a 6-speed gearbox. For the 2.2 HDi, the codes 4HV, 4HU, 4HG and 4HH all appear across the 2006–2021 period, with a switch between a 5-speed and a 6-speed gearbox depending on the exact code.

Before and after 2006: two distinct transmission architectures

Up to 2006, the Boxer used engines of Sofim origin (2.5 HDi, 2.8 HDi) or PSA/Ford origin (1.9 HDi, 2.0 HDi), paired with 5-speed gearboxes. From 2006 onwards, the X250 platform introduced the 2.2 HDi and 3.0 HDi with gearboxes featuring entirely different ratios and casings. A gearbox from the pre-2006 generation is mechanically incompatible with a post-2006 engine, even where the engine capacity is similar. The engine codes AHN and AH03 (2.0 HDi post-2006) as well as THX and F28DTCR (2.8 HDi) complete the picture, each requiring a specific reference.

Key points to watch when identifying your gearbox

The Boxer is also sold as the Citroën Jumper and Fiat Ducato on the same platform: the engine codes are identical and the gearboxes are the same. However, 4x4 versions (reference type 20KM73-4X4) feature a specific output casing and are not interchangeable with rear-wheel-drive versions. On the 2.2 HDi, the power output (120 hp, 130 hp, 150 hp) can determine whether a 5-speed or 6-speed gearbox is fitted; the engine code alone is not always sufficient — the model year and rated power must both be cross-referenced to confirm the exact reference.
