Boxer 2.2 HDi: 5- or 6-speed gearbox, and when should you send in your own unit rather than taking one from stock?

This is a practical question on this light commercial vehicle. The 2.2 HDi spans a long production period — 2006 à 2021 — and has been fitted with two families of manual gearbox: a 5-speed in the earlier years, and a 6-speed on later versions or higher power outputs. The two are not interchangeable, and it is the engine code — 4HV, 4HU, 4HG or 4HH — that determines which one fits the vehicle, even before looking at the year.

When reconditioning your own gearbox becomes the right choice

In this light commercial segment, some gearboxes have rare references or specific configurations linked to the vehicle's use (payload, four-wheel drive, crew cab). When a specific reference is not available from stock, or when the original gearbox is in a condition that allows reconditioning, having your own unit reconditioned — which is then returned to the same owner — is a serious alternative worth considering. This method is distinct from an exchange from stock: here, it is the customer's own unit that comes back reconditioned, not a different one.
