Volkswagen from 1981 to 2024: gearboxes, engines and turbos — why rebuilding your own unit makes all the difference

Across forty years of Volkswagen production, the vehicle parc spans generations that are worlds apart technically: a Transporter T4 diesel from the 1990s, a Golf VII DSG 7, or a recent Tiguan 2.0 TDI 4Motion each require a different type of part and a different approach to supply. The choice between an exchange unit and rebuilding your own unit depends first and foremost on exchange availability in the market and the condition of the original casing. For rare references — Touareg transfer cases, Scirocco 2.0 TSI 6-speed manual gearboxes, or certain Crafter 2.5 TDI transmissions — rebuilding the customer's own unit is often the only realistic option.

Three part families, each with its own identification logic

Gearboxes account for the largest share of available references, covering everything from the 4- and 5-speed manuals fitted to the Polo, Fox and Lupo through to the DSG 6 and DSG 7 units found in the Golf, Passat and Tiguan. DSG gearboxes are supplied with a new dual-clutch assembly but without the mechatronic unit. Automated manual gearboxes of the Shiftmatic type are supplied without the actuator. Bare engines cover the 1.9 TDI, 2.5 TDI and several TSI variants, among others; turbos are available new or reconditioned for the most common diesel and petrol turbo engines.

Precise identification is critical on Volkswagen vehicles: the engine designation alone is not enough. The 2.0 TDI alone encompasses more than sixty distinct engine codes (AZV, BKD, CBAB, CJAA, CUPA, DFHA, DJKA…) spread across outputs ranging from 110 to 190 hp depending on the generation. The 1.9 TDI covers thirty codes (AFN, ALH, BKC, BLS, BXE…) across different architectures depending on the model and year. The 1.4 TSI distinguishes codes such as CAXA (122 hp), CZDA or CZEA (150 hp), and also BLG and BMY (140–170 hp), none of which share the same gearboxes. The engine code stamped on the block remains the only reliable reference.

Models and engines: where the range is concentrated

The Golf accounts for the largest share of available references, followed by the Transporter, the Polo and the Touran. The Transporter T4 in 2.5 TDI covers around twenty engine codes (ACV, AJT, AXD, AXE, BNZ, BPC…) depending on output and year; the T5 and T6 in 2.0 TDI extend the range with more recent codes such as CAAB, CFCA or CXFA. For less common models — Corrado, Derby, Lupo, Amarok — stock is more limited, and rebuilding the original unit is worth considering as a priority before placing any order.

    Frequently asked questions

Are your Volkswagen parts compatible with my model?

We cover the vast majority of Volkswagen engines. To get the exact part, give us your number plate or request an online quote: our advisers confirm compatibility using your registration document.

    Are reconditioned Volkswagen parts reliable?

Yes. Every Volkswagen part is reconditioned in our workshop, with wear parts replaced, bench-tested and guaranteed for up to 24 months. A reliable and far more affordable alternative to new, starting from a restored original part.

How does the exchange system work for a Volkswagen part?

You order your reconditioned Volkswagen part, we dispatch it, then you send us back your old unit (the core). We arrange all the transport both ways — you don't have to handle any logistics.

Do you deliver Volkswagen parts everywhere, and how quickly?

Yes, we deliver throughout France and Europe. Depending on the availability of the reference, your Volkswagen part leaves our workshop quickly, and you can pay in instalments, up to 10 payments.
