From the 8140 codes to the F1AE and F1CE: forty years of Fiat gearboxes under one catalogue

The engine code stamped on the block is the essential starting point for identifying any Fiat. 8140.43S and 8140.47 denote two variants of the 2.5 TD fitted to first- and second-generation Ducato and Iveco models — the associated gearboxes differ in their bellhousing and axle ratio. At the other end of the timeline, the codes F1AE0481D, F1AE0481N, F1AE3481D and F1CE0481D / F1CE3481E cover the Euro 4 to Euro 6 generations of the 2.3 Multijet and 3.0 Multijet on the Ducato III and IV: even at the same engine capacity, the compatible reconditioned gearbox is not the same depending on the exact code, as the gear ratios and input shaft length changed between successive homologation updates.

Small-capacity engines: 188A5000, 198A4000, 312A and the TwinAir family

On the 500, Panda and Punto, reading the engine code prevents the most common mix-ups. The 188A5000 (1.2 8v) uses a cable-operated 5-speed manual gearbox, while the 169A4000 (1.4) moves up to 6 speeds on the more recent production runs. The codes 312A2000 and 312A5000 identify the two versions of the 0.9 TwinAir: despite a similar external appearance, their gearboxes share very few internal components, owing to different maximum torque figures. The 198A4000 (1.3 Multijet) is fitted to the Doblo, Fiorino and Idea with a 5-speed gearbox specific to its clutch housing.

Dualogic, DDCT and Comfort-Matic: three automated transmissions, three architectures

The Fiat range features three types of non-manual gearbox, each with a radically different architecture. The Dualogic is a 5-speed manual gearbox operated by an electrohydraulic actuator — the gearbox is supplied without that actuator. The DDCT (dry dual-clutch, found on certain 500 and Tipo models with the 1.4 T-Jet or 1.6 Multijet, engine codes 250A1000 and 55263842) is supplied with a new dual-clutch assembly but without the mechatronic unit. The Comfort-Matic, exclusive to the Ducato and Talento, is based on a different architecture designed for demanding commercial use, and uses the engine code R9M410 / R9M413 for versions arising from the joint venture with Renault. Here too, the engine code remains the only reliable reference for avoiding ordering errors between a heavy diesel Ducato and a Talento derived from the Trafic.
