Mitsubishi Gearboxes: did the same engine always come with the same gearbox between 2000 and 2021?

Not always. Over two decades of production, Mitsubishi updated its transmissions in line with facelifts and new engine generations. The L200 is the clearest example: the 2.5 DI-D with engine codes 4D56 and 4D56T ran alongside later generations fitted with the 2.4 DI-D (code 4N15) and the 2.2 DI-D (codes 4N14 or 4HN, also known as DW12MTED4). These three diesel engines did not share the same manual gearbox, and they are not interchangeable despite having similar engine capacities.

Identifying the correct gearbox by model and engine code

Engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the right gearbox. On the Outlander, the 2.4 MIVEC petrol (code 4G69) takes a 5-speed manual gearbox that is different from the one fitted to diesel versions. On the Pajero, the 3.2 DI-D (code 4M41) and the 3.0 DI-D (codes 4M42 or 4P10) belong to two distinct gearbox families, in 5 or 6 speeds depending on the year and trim level. The ASX 1.8 DI-D (code 4N13) and the Colt 1.5 Turbo (code 4G15T) each represent their own distinct application, with no crossover possible with parts from van or SUV models. For the Canter, the 3.0 DI-D with engine code 4P10 is a light commercial vehicle application with its own specific references.

Key points to watch with reconditioned DI-D gearboxes

Mitsubishi manual gearboxes fitted to heavily used DI-D engines — the L200 in mixed road and off-road use, the Pajero in full off-road conditions — show accelerated wear on the 3rd and 4th gear synchromesh rings in the older 5-speed versions. The manufacturer's reference stamped on the gearbox casing remains the most reliable way to confirm exact compatibility: references such as MR980842, MN168852 or 2500A294 illustrate Mitsubishi's own numbering system, which varies according to the year of manufacture and the drivetrain (2 or 4-wheel drive).
