Lancia 5-speed gearboxes are robust, the DFN is fragile: two things to know before you order

On Lancia models produced between 1999 and 2021, the main reason for gearbox replacement varies considerably depending on the transmission. The 5-speed manuals fitted to the Ypsilon and Musa suffer from typical synchromesh wear, often showing up as difficulty selecting 2nd or 3rd gear, particularly when cold. The DFN gearbox (an automated manual derived from the standard manual), found notably on the Ypsilon 1.2 and 1.4, has several weak points: the actuator fails regularly, but the mechanical gearbox itself can also wear out, with juddering and refusal to engage gears often forcing replacement of the mechanical unit alone. The 6-speed manual, reserved for more powerful engines such as the 2.4 JTD in the Thesis, is rarer but more expensive on an exchange basis.

Ypsilon and Musa: engine code takes priority over engine capacity

The Ypsilon and Musa account for the majority of references in this selection. On the 1.2, two engine codes exist: 169A4000 and 188A5000, which do not take the same gearbox. The same logic applies to the 1.4, with 350A1000 and 843A1000. Mixing up these codes when ordering is the most common mistake on these models: engine capacity alone is not enough. The 1.3 Multijet, fitted to both the Ypsilon and Musa, covers three distinct engine codes — 188A9000, 199A2000 and 199A3000 — corresponding to successive generation updates over the production run.

Lybra, Thesis, Delta: isolated engine variants

The Lybra 1.8 (engine code 839A4.000) and the Thesis 2.4 JTD (engine code 841C000) each have only one reference in this collection, which reflects the reality of the market: these models are rarely seen on the road and enquiries are occasional. The Delta 1.6 Multijet (engine code 198A2000) has a reconditioned gearbox available on an exchange basis, as with all parts on this page. For these low-volume models, it is advisable to check availability in advance.
