18 engine codes on the MINI: why the sales method depends first and foremost on the generation

Between 2001 and 2019, the MINI went through three architecturally distinct generations, with 5- and 6-speed manual gearboxes as well as a DSG 7 — sold without the mechatronic unit, with a new dual-clutch. This wealth of engine variants (from the W10B16, originally a BMW-Tritec unit, through to the modern B-series blocks) makes correct identification critical before any decision is made. The appropriate sales method depends directly on parts availability and the condition of the old unit.

Exchange or rebuild: what really drives the choice

For common gearboxes — particularly those fitted to the 1.6 petrol engines (N12B16, N16B16, N18B16A, N18B16C) found in the vast majority of second-generation Cooper and One models — exchange is the most straightforward route. For less common engine variants such as the 2.0 SD (N47C20A) or the 1.6d (9HZ / N47C16A), the gearbox can be harder to source as a reconditioned unit from stock. It is precisely in these cases that rebuilding the customer's own unit makes the most sense: the original unit is overhauled and returned, avoiding availability issues on rare references.

Identification pitfalls on the MINI: the same engine capacity, several incompatible blocks

The 1.6 petrol is the trickiest case: the W10B16 code (first-generation R50/R53, from 2001 onwards) is not interchangeable with an N12B16 or N16B16 from the R56 generation, nor with an N18B16A or N18B16C from the late production run. The gearbox associated with each of these blocks differs. The same logic applies on the diesel side: the 2.0d covers the codes B47C20, B47C20A, B47C20B and B47D20, which correspond to distinct evolutions — only the code stamped on the engine itself can confirm that the correct unit is being ordered. On the Countryman and the Clubman, verifying the exact engine variant is all the more important given that these models may have been fitted with different configurations from Cooper models of the same engine capacity.

Guide by model and engine variant

The Cooper accounts for the bulk of the catalogue, with petrol and diesel variants covering the 1.6, 1.5 Turbo (B38, B38A15A, B38A15M0) and 2.0 (B48A20A) blocks. The Cooper S stands apart thanks to the mechanical specifics of its high-performance versions. The One shares some of the first-generation 1.6 gearboxes but with different ratios depending on the year. For the 1.5i and 1.5 Turbo engines in the most recent generations (F-series), the 6-speed manual gearbox is the dominant reference, whilst the DSG 7 covers a more targeted range.
