18 engine codes for the MINI: why identification comes before everything else

The MINI range spans 2001 to 2019 with no fewer than 18 referenced engine codes — W10B16, N12B16, N16B16, N18B16, B38A15A, B47C20, B48A20A and their suffixed variants. On the same Cooper 1.6 model, the gearbox matched to the N12B16A is not the same as the one for the N16B16A or the N18B16C: the displayed engine capacity is not enough — the code stamped on the engine is the essential starting point. This is where identification errors are most common, before the question of how the part is sold even arises.

5-speed manual, 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG: three architectures, distinct references

The MINI range has successively featured 5-speed manual gearboxes on the early petrol generations, 6-speed manuals on the N18 and N47 diesel units, and then a 7-speed DSG on the more recent B38 and B48 engines. This DSG is supplied with a new dual-clutch, without the mechatronic unit. The GS5 references denote 5-speed gearboxes, and GS6 references denote 6-speed units — the prefix alone is not sufficient; the full suffix (e.g. GS6-59DG-TACS or GS6-58BG-TBAO) distinguishes parts that are incompatible with one another. On the diesel side, the 9HZ (DV6TED4) and the N47C16A do not take the same gearboxes as the N47C20A or the B47C20B, even where the power output is similar.

Exchange or rebuild: when one is the right choice over the other

Exchange suits the majority of cases when a reference exactly matching the engine code is available. Rebuilding your original unit makes the most sense for rare gearboxes — certain suffixed variants of the GS6-59SG or the GS5-52BG in a specific configuration — or when the unit carries a factory modification unique to a particular production batch that the standard exchange chain does not cover. The Countryman and the Clubman, which are less well represented in the reconditioned range, are also cases where a rebuild is worth considering first. In all cases, the full engine code and the vehicle's year of production remain the two essential pieces of information needed to guide the right choice.
