Reconditioned MINI Engine: exchange or rebuilding your own unit – which option applies to your situation?

The answer depends first and foremost on the model and engine. For recent petrol Cooper models — engine codes B38A15A (1.5i) or B48A20A (2.0i) — exchange is the standard route: sufficient volumes of units are in circulation. For rarer or older engines, however, such as the W11B16A (1.6i Cooper S first generation, up to around 2006) or the N12B14A (1.4i), the pool of available exchange units is structurally more limited. It is precisely in these cases that rebuilding your own unit makes the most sense: your engine is sent to our workshop, reconditioned, and that same unit — with its known history — is returned to you.

The many codes on the 1.6i: a critical identification point

The 1.6i is the most widely represented engine in this collection, and the most likely to catch you out. Depending on the generation and model, this 1.6-litre unit can carry very different codes: N12B16BA, N12-B16A, N14B16A, N16B16A, N18B16A, W11B16A, or alternatively EP6CDTX, 5FU, 5F03 for units produced under the BMW-PSA partnership. These codes are not interchangeable: an error when ordering will result in the wrong part being supplied. The engine code stamped on the block — not simply the engine capacity or the quoted power output — is the only reliable way to identify the correct engine.

Diesel: two engine families for Countryman, Paceman and Cooper

On the diesel side, the collection covers two main families. The N47C16A is fitted to the 1.6d, found notably on the Cooper and Clubman. The N47C20A (also referenced as N47-C20A) covers the 2.0d and 2.0 D, an engine found in the Countryman and Paceman. The B37C15A covers the 1.5d fitted to more recent generations. The range spans from 2001 to 2023, meaning that several generations of the same model may coexist with entirely different engine units: the year of first registration and the engine code are the two pieces of information to check systematically before placing any order.
