SEAT Engines from 2004 to 2020: from the 1.9 TDI to TSI Units – Two Generations of Mechanical Philosophy

Before 2008, the SEAT Leon, Ibiza and Altea ran almost exclusively on diesel units 1.9 TDI (engine codes BMM, BMN) or naturally aspirated 1.6 petrol engines. From 2008–2010 onwards, the brand shifted decisively towards the Volkswagen Group's turbocharged architectures: TSI on the petrol side (1.2, 1.4, 1.8, 2.0) and Common Rail TDI (1.6, 2.0) on the diesel side. These two eras share neither engine blocks nor parts: a Cordoba 1.9 TDI engine has nothing in common with the 2.0 TDI found in a Leon III.

Diesel: 1.9 TDI and 2.0 TDI – Two Families Not to Be Confused

The 1.9 TDI with indirect injection (engine codes BMM, BMN) was fitted to the early generations of the Leon and Altea up to around 2010. The 1.6 TDI (engine codes CAYC, CLNA) succeeded it on entry-level variants: a lighter block, a different cylinder head, and not interchangeable. The 2.0 TDI covers a wide range — engine codes CFJA, CFHF, CFHA, CRMB, CRBC — and several power outputs across the Leon, Altea and Alhambra. Same engine capacity, different codes: the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable reference for identifying the correct reconditioned engine.

Petrol: from Naturally Aspirated 1.6 Engines to TSI – A Technical Turning Point Around 2010

Petrol engines produced before 2010 are conventional naturally aspirated 1.6 units. From the facelifted Leon II and especially the Leon III (2012) onwards, the range was built around TSI engines: 1.2 TSI (engine codes CBZB, CJZA on the Ibiza and Leon), 1.4 TSI (CUPA, CUNA — versions with or without the ACT cylinder deactivation system), 1.8 TSI (CJXA, CJXG, CJXC), 2.0 TSI (CCZB, CCZA, BWA, AXX, CKFC) for the Leon Cupra and FR. On the 2.0 TSI in particular, the earlier engine codes (AXX, BWA) share a timing chain architecture known to be prone to stretching; later codes incorporate manufacturer-issued corrections. Checking the production year and engine code will prevent you from ordering a block that is incompatible with the gearbox generation and ancillary components already fitted to the vehicle.
