On Land Rover vehicles, the turbo is almost exclusively diesel — and that fact changes everything when it comes to identification

Every turbo listed in this collection covers diesel engines: from the 2.5 Td5 on the Defender to the 4.4 TDV8 on the Range Rover, taking in the 2.2, 2.7 and 3.0 TDV6 along the way. This diesel-only focus has a direct bearing on the technology involved: virtually all of these turbos use a variable geometry, which adjusts exhaust gas flow to match engine speed. The thermally more demanding V8 units (TDV8, SDV8) may combine variable geometry with stricter sealing and lubrication requirements. The older 2.5 Td5, by contrast, uses a fixed geometry with a mechanical wastegate — a key technological difference to be aware of before placing any order.

Five models, very different engine families

This collection covers the Range Rover, Discovery, Freelander, Range Rover Evoque and Defender. Within each model, several engine families coexist, with no turbo interchangeability between them. On the Discovery and Range Rover, the 3.0 TDV6 comes in several power outputs (211, 245, 249, 256, 272 hp) under the codes 306DT and AJTDV6 — two distinct codes that do not necessarily share the same turbo. The 4.4 TDV8 and 4.4 SDV8 fall under the codes 448DT, AJD-V8 and SDV8; here again, a single engine capacity covers several turbo references depending on the variant. On the Freelander and Evoque, the 2.2 may appear under the codes 224DT, DW12B or DW12BTED4 depending on the version (TD4, SD4, eD4), which generates different references despite an identical engine capacity.

Identification pitfalls and causes of failure not to overlook

The engine code stamped on the block is the essential starting point: on the Defender 2.5 Td5, three codes exist (10P, 14P, 15P) for the same engine capacity, reflecting different stages of mechanical development. Mixing up variants leads to ordering a turbo that is incompatible in terms of geometry or oil connection. As for symptoms, the variable-geometry turbos on TDV6 and TDV8 engines are prone to vane fouling, often made worse by a clogged EGR circuit or degraded oil: gradual power loss, whistling and limp-mode activation are the most common signs. Before fitting a reconditioned or new turbo, it is essential to address the root cause — lubrication quality, a blocked diesel particulate filter, an air leak on the intake circuit — otherwise the new unit will suffer the same damage in the same timeframe.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Land Rover.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Land Rover?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
