Why does the Discovery 2.5 TD5 turbo fail?

On the Land Rover Discovery fitted with the 2.5 TD5 engine (codes 10 P, 14 P, 15 P), the turbocharger operates under demanding conditions, particularly during off-road use or sustained towing. The most common causes of failure on this engine are insufficient lubrication of the turbine, degraded engine oil or oil changed too infrequently, a clogged air filter allowing contaminants to reach the compressor, or a cracked intercooler hose disrupting intake pressure. Revving the engine hard immediately after a cold start, before the oil has reached its operating temperature, also accelerates wear on the turbo bearings.

Compatibility of the turbo for the Land Rover Discovery

This new turbo is compatible with reference 452239-5009W and fits the Land Rover Discovery with the 2.5 TD5 diesel engine (2495 cm³), engine codes 10 P, 14 P and 15 P. Before placing an order, it is recommended that you check the exact reference printed on the old turbo removed from the vehicle, as several turbo variants may have been fitted depending on the Discovery's version and date of manufacture.

It is only collected after the new turbo has been delivered and fitted to the Discovery, so the vehicle is not left off the road during the process. The part carries a 12-month parts warranty, provided fitting is carried out by a professional. Payment can be spread over up to 10 instalments.

Fitting advice for the Discovery 2.5 TD5

Before installing the new turbo, check the condition of the oil circuit (feed and return hoses, no blockages or carbon deposits), verify that the air intake is clean and that the hoses connecting the turbo to the intercooler are properly sealed. Priming the turbo with oil before the first start-up ensures immediate lubrication of the bearings and prevents any dry running on start-up. Checking the air filter and carrying out a recent oil change using an oil suited to the TD5 engine are also recommended to maximise the service life of the new turbo.
