Land Rover Engines and Gearboxes: from the 2.5 Tdi to engine codes 204DT and 224DT – a decade of incompatible families

On a Defender or a Discovery, engine capacity alone is not enough to identify the right part. The same 2.5 diesel can take a block coded 23L or a DT224 depending on the vehicle's year and generation, and these two families share neither architecture nor replacement references. On the Freelander or the Evoque in 2.2, the distinction between codes 224DT, 204DT and 204DTA directly determines the choice of bare engine or matching gearbox. The model year and the code stamped on the engine remain the only reliable references.

Four models, three parts families, all diesel

The range covers the Defender, the Range Rover Evoque, the Freelander and the Discovery, from 2007 to 2024, in diesel only. Available gearboxes are 5- or 6-speed manual depending on the generation; transfer cases, specific to full-time 4x4 versions, form a separate family. On the engine side, the 2.2 TDCi and 2.2 TD4 blocks (codes DW12BTED4 and 224DT) cover the Freelander 2 and first-generation Evoque, while the 2.4 TDCi (code 244DT) is fitted to certain Defenders and the Transit-sourced Freelander. The 2.0 D (code 204DTD) marks the arrival of the Ingenium block from 2015 on the facelifted Evoque.

Key points to watch depending on use and engine family

The Td5 2.5 (code 15P) fitted to the Defender and Discovery up to the mid-2000s is well known for head gasket and injector harness issues; a reconditioned bare engine built on this platform must be clearly distinguished from an earlier 2.5 Tdi, which belongs to a different architecture. In heavy-duty applications — a Defender used as a working 4x4 or a Discovery towing under load — the transfer case is subjected to stresses that the main gearbox does not experience: the two units wear at different rates and must be identified separately. The two purchasing options available, exchange and customer-unit rebuild, apply according to the availability of the model in question; checking the engine code before placing any order remains essential to avoid a reference error between families such as 204DT and 204DTA, which differ despite their similar designations.
