12 Volvo models, two engine families: why usage matters as much as engine capacity

Turbocharged Volvo models — saloons S40, S60, S80, estates V40, V50, V60, V70, SUVs XC60, XC70, XC90 and compacts C30 — cover a wide range of uses: daily motorway miles in an S80 or V70, light towing in an XC70, heavy urban driving in a C30 or V40. These usage profiles have a direct impact on the turbo: engines run cold, on short trips or with degraded oil are the first to suffer bearing failure or turbo seal leaks. Before any replacement, identifying and addressing the root cause — EGR fouling, a faulty oil circuit, a blocked diesel particulate filter — is essential to avoid a repeat failure.

Two engine families, diesel and petrol: distinct turbos that must not be confused

The Volvo catalogue is clearly split between diesel and petrol engines, each with their own turbo references. On the diesel side, the D5244T, D5244T2, D5244T5 fit the 2.4 D5 163 hp found in the S60, V70, XC70 and S80; the D5204T2, D5204T3, D5204T7 cover the 2.0 D3 and D4 fitted to more recent generations of the S60, V40, V60 and XC60; the D4204T4, D4204T8, D4204T9, D4204T13, D4204T16 correspond to the 2.0 D2 and D3 in 120 or 150 hp form. The 1.6 D uses the code D4164T or DV6UTED4 depending on the variant — a PSA-sourced engine whose variable-geometry turbo is shared across several manufacturers and must not be confused with Volvo's own units.

On the petrol side, the wastegate turbos from the older 1.9 T and 2.0 T (codes B4204, B4204T2, B4204T3) differ from those on the modern 2.0 T5 (B4204T11, B4204T14, B4204T15, B4204T17, B4204T41, B4204T47). The older 2.3 T and 2.4 T — five-cylinder engines with codes B5234T3, B5244T, B5244T3, B5254T — have their own turbos too, distinct from the current four-cylinder units. Confusing these families based on engine capacity alone is a common mistake: the engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable reference.

New and reconditioned turbos: two options depending on the reference

Depending on the reference, the turbo is available new or reconditioned on an exchange basis. Reconditioned turbos cover the most common references found on Volvo vehicles currently in use; new turbos cover other applications. The symptoms that lead to replacement are typical: whistling under acceleration, blue or black exhaust smoke, a noticeable loss of power or the vehicle entering limp mode. On the D5244T and B5254T in particular, insufficient lubrication at start-up — often caused by oil changes being left too long — is the most well-documented cause of failure.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Volvo.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Volvo?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
