From the 4D56 to the 4M41: why the same 2.5 or 3.2 Mitsubishi can take incompatible turbos depending on the generation

On Mitsubishi diesels, engine capacity alone tells you nothing. The 2.5 TD found in the Pajero and L200 is built around the 4D56 block, but this engine code actually covers several variants: 4D56T, 4D56TD, 4D56HP, 4D5CDI. Each corresponds to a different generation and a distinct turbo, with references that are not interchangeable. Identifying the correct turbo therefore requires knowing the full engine code — not just the capacity listed in the spec sheet.

    Engine families: 4D56, 4M41, 4M40, 4N13, 4N14, 4D68T

The 3.2 DI-D (Pajero, L200, Outlander) is paired with the 4M41 code, available in 160, 165 and 170 hp versions depending on the year and market. The 2.8 TD from earlier generations uses the 4M40 — a separate block whose turbo has no interchangeability whatsoever with the 4M41. On the ASX, the 1.8 DI-D is based on the 4N13 (116 or 150 hp); the 2.2 DI-D on the 4N14. The Spacewagon 2.0 TD GLX 82 hp uses the 4D68T — an engine that stands alone in the range, with no connection to the 4D56 or 4N13.

Key points to watch on Mitsubishi diesel turbos

The variable-geometry turbos fitted to DI-D engines are sensitive to carbon build-up on the turbine vanes, often made worse by extended service intervals or degraded oil. On 4D56 engines used in demanding 4x4 applications (L200, Pajero off-road), the bearings and oil seal integrity are the first areas to wear. Before any replacement, it is essential to identify and address the root cause of the failure — lubrication quality, oil feed circuit, EGR fouling — otherwise a reconditioned or new turbo will be exposed to the same damage.

Depending on the reference, the turbos available here are either new (direct sale) or reconditioned (sold on an exchange basis). The product listing specifies the applicable sales method for each reference. Models covered include the Pajero, L200, ASX, Triton, Outlander and Spacewagon, across all diesel engines referenced in this guide.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

It depends on the reference: each product page states whether the turbo is new (straight sale, nothing to send back) or reconditioned (exchange basis), together with the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Mitsubishi.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

Only for a reconditioned turbo, sold on an exchange basis: you return your old turbo after the new one has been delivered and fitted, and we arrange the collection. A new turbo is a straight sale: nothing to send back, one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Mitsubishi?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
