Hyundai CRDi turbos rarely fail on their own: the root cause is almost always upstream

On Hyundai diesel engines — whether the D4FA or the D4FB fitted to the 1.5 and 1.6 CRDi, the D4EA used in the 2.0 CRDi, or the D4CB fitted to the 2.5 CRDi — turbo failure almost always points to a pre-existing problem: degraded or insufficient oil, a clogged air intake circuit, a blocked diesel particulate filter creating back-pressure, or a foreign body drawn into the system. The classic symptoms are persistent blue or black exhaust smoke, a characteristic whistling under load, a gradual loss of power, and the vehicle entering limp-home mode. Replacing the turbo without addressing the root cause will inevitably lead to another failure.

D4EA, D4EA-V, D4EA-F: three variants not to mix up on the 2.0 CRDi

The 2.0 CRDi is the most widely used engine in the range — i30, Tucson, ix35, Santa Fe, Elantra, Trajet — and it is where identification is most critical. Depending on the power output (113, 125, 136, 140 or 185 hp) and the vehicle generation, the block may be fitted with a D4EA, a D4EA-V or a D4EA-F, each corresponding to a different turbo reference. The engine code stamped on the block is the only reliable way to avoid ordering the wrong part. The D4HA covers the 136 and 185 hp versions of the Tucson and shares no references with the D4EA units.

Variable geometry and wastegate: two technologies found across the range

Variable geometry turbos (VGT) are fitted to a large proportion of Hyundai CRDi engines, notably the D4FA, D4FB and D4CB: the nozzle ring vanes become clogged over time, causing erratic turbo response before outright failure. On older blocks such as the D4BH (2.5 TCI, H100, Grand Starex) or the E4CB (2.5 TD/CRDi), wastegate technology is more common; the actuator and any leaks in the boost circuit are the first things to inspect. All of these turbos are available new, sold outright (no exchange required), for the i30, Tucson, ix35, Getz, Elantra, Accent, H100, Grand Starex, i20, i40, ix55, Santa Fe, Matrix, Lavita, Click and Trajet.new, sold outright, for the i30, Tucson, ix35, Getz, Elantra, Accent, H100, Grand Starex, i20, i40, ix55, Santa Fe, Matrix, Lavita, Click and Trajet.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Hyundai.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Hyundai?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.

    Engine codes covered: D4FB, D4EA, D4EA-V, D4BH, D4EA-F, D4FA, D4FD
