Hyundai CRDi turbos rarely fail without warning signs

On Hyundai diesel engines — and this is particularly true of the D4FA, D4FB, D4EA and D4HA units fitted to the majority of i30, Tucson, ix35 and Santa Fe models — turbo failure almost always follows the same pattern: a high-pitched whine when cold, blue-grey smoke under acceleration, then a sharp drop in power before the engine enters limp-home mode. These symptoms point to worn bearings or a loss of sealing, most often caused by inadequate lubrication: degraded oil, a blocked oil circuit, or delayed oil changes. On the D4EA-V (2.0 CRDi 136 hp) fitted to the Tucson and Elantra, the variable geometry — wastegate or moving-vane turbo depending on the version — is also susceptible to DPF soot build-up, which can seize the actuator and disrupt boost pressure before any outright mechanical failure occurs. Identifying the root cause before replacement is not optional: a new turbo fitted to an uncleaned oil circuit will fail again within a few thousand kilometres.

Identifying the correct turbo: the engine code takes priority over the stated power output

The range covered here spans 16 models, from the Getz to the Grand Starex, with a focus on CRDi engines from 1.5 to 2.5 litres. The recurring pitfall: several power outputs can coexist on the same engine block. The 1.6 CRDi is available in 90, 110, 116 and 128 hp variants (code D4FB or D4FD), and the 2.0 CRDi covers 113, 125, 136, 140 and 185 hp (D4EA, D4EA-F, D4EA-V, D4HA). The Hyundai manufacturer reference — for example 28231-27900 or 282012A700 — and the engine code stamped on the block are the only two reliable starting points; engine capacity or power output alone is not enough to avoid mix-ups. Petrol engine codes G3LC, G3LE, G3LF, G4FJ and D6EA are also referenced in the collection. All turbos listed here are new, sold direct with no old unit to return, with references equivalent to original Hyundai references.

Light commercials and load-carrying vehicles: H100 and Grand Starex — a different set of demands

The H100 and Grand Starex, powered by a 2.5 CRDi or 2.5 TCI (codes D4BH, D4CB, E4CB), put the turbo under sustained load conditions that accelerate bearing wear and place greater stress on the seals. On these vehicles, checking the oil flow to the turbo and the condition of the air filter are essential steps before any fitting work begins. Reference 715924-5003W or 5004W, common on these blocks, is no substitute for verifying the exact engine code stamped on the casing.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your Hyundai.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my Hyundai?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.

    Engine codes covered: D4FD, G3LC, G3LE, G3LF, D6EA, D4HA, E4CB, D4CB, G4FJ
