New vs reconditioned 2.0 CRDi turbo: what's the real difference for Hyundai and Kia models?

All the turbos available in this collection are new turbos, sold with no old unit to return. There is no reconditioned version here, so the question of choosing between the two options simply does not arise — every reference corresponds to a new, unused part, delivered directly. This is a direct result of the supply structure available for the 2.0 CRDi Hyundai-Kia, independent of any other commercial consideration.

D4EA, D4EA-F, D4EA-V, D4HA: four engine codes, one engine capacity

The Hyundai-Kia Group's 2.0 CRDi covers several distinct engine codes: D4EA, D4EA-F, D4EA-V and D4HA. This is the first identification pitfall. A Hyundai Tucson, a Kia Sportage or a Hyundai Santa Fe may show the same engine capacity and a similar power output — 113, 115, 125, 136, 140 or 185 hp depending on the variant — without sharing the same engine code or, consequently, the same turbo reference. The D4HA code, for example, appears with power outputs that differ from those of the D4EA: the two are not interchangeable without verification. Even within the D4EA family, the -F and -V suffixes denote variants that do not necessarily take the same manufacturer reference.

Identifying the correct reference for the 2.0 CRDi: common pitfalls

The vehicles concerned — Hyundai Tucson, Hyundai i30, Hyundai ix35, Hyundai Trajet, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sportage, Kia Carens, Kia Ceed — all share the 2.0 CRDi commercial designation, yet the manufacturer turbo reference varies according to the engine code stamped on the block, not the power output alone. An identical power figure can correspond to different codes depending on the model and version; a single reference may cover several power outputs. The correct approach is to start from the engine code — visible on the engine plate or in the vehicle's technical documentation — and then cross-reference with the model and power output. If there is any doubt about a reference's compatibility, consulting the manufacturer's documentation remains essential.

Symptoms and causes of failure on this diesel engine

On the 2.0 CRDi, turbo failures most commonly present as a noticeable loss of power, an unusual whistling noise or exhaust smoke. The most frequent causes are lubrication breakdown — oil that is too old, a clogged oil circuit, or too long a delay before oil pressure builds after start-up — fouling caused by a poorly maintained diesel particulate filter or EGR circuit, and ingestion of foreign objects. Before any replacement, identifying and rectifying the root cause is essential: fitting a new turbo to an engine whose oil circuit has not been properly cleaned risks rapid failure once again.
