On the Mazda 2.2 diesel, the engine code takes priority over engine capacity when identifying the correct turbo

The pitfall is real: the same 2.2 D can produce 150 hp or 175 hp and may carry any of the codes SHY1, SHY4, SHY6 or SHY8, whilst the SKYACTIV-D variant of the same capacity adds the code SH01 to that list. These codes do not refer to the same engine block and do not correspond to the same turbo references — the stated power output is therefore not sufficient to confirm a part. Only reading the engine code stamped on the block, cross-referenced with the model and year, makes it possible to pinpoint the correct reference from examples such as SH01-13-700A to SH01-13-700E or SHY11370Z.

Five models, with clearly distinct petrol and diesel engines

The new turbos listed here cover the Mazda 2, Mazda 3, Mazda 6, CX-5 and CX-7, in both diesel and petrol. On the diesel side, the 1.4 MZ-CD (code DV4TD) and the 1.6 DI / 1.6 MZR-CD (code Y601) are entirely different architectures, with no shared parts despite their similar engine capacity. On the petrol side, the 2.3 MZR DISI Turbo in the CX-7 (code L3-VDT, references K0422-582 and variants) and the 2.5 Turbo in the Mazda 3 and CX-5 (code PY-VPTS, references PY8V-13700-A / B) are two entirely separate families with no interchangeability between them.

Causes of failure and points to check before fitting

On Mazda engines, turbo failure is frequently linked to poor lubrication: old oil, a contaminated circuit, or too long a delay before the engine reaches operating temperature after a cold start. The classic symptoms — whistling, white or grey smoke, a marked loss of power, or even limp-home mode — indicate worn bearings or a failure of the internal seals. On diesels fitted with a variable-geometry turbo, fouling of the moving vanes by exhaust gases (EGR, DPF) is a recurring cause of seizure. Identifying and correcting the root cause — oil quality, lubrication circuit, filtration — is essential before any replacement, regardless of the engine type.
