SsangYong Turbos: before and after the switch to Xdi engines – what SUV and MPV use really changes

Rexton, Kyron, Rodius, Actyon: these are primarily SUVs and large MPVs driven under load, often towing, sometimes on steep gradients. This kind of use puts the turbo under intense thermal stress – rapid temperature spikes, prolonged engine-braking on descents, and short urban cycles that prevent the oil from circulating properly before the engine is switched off. The result: turbos across the Xdi range wear out quickly if the root cause is not addressed before replacement.

Two engine families, four engine codes not to be confused

The SsangYong diesel range covered here is built around two distinct engine capacities. The 2.7 Xdi – available in 163 and 165 hp versions – is associated with the engine codes D27DT and D27DTP; these two codes are not interchangeable and require different turbo references, particularly between the Rexton and the Rodius. The 2.0 Xdi is represented by the codes D20DT (Kyron, Actyon) and D20DTR (Actyon). Before placing any order, checking the engine code stamped on the block is essential: the same commercial designation '2.0 XDi' can correspond to two different codes depending on the vehicle's year of production, with incompatible turbo fitments.

Common symptoms and the cause to address before refitting

The typical signs of a failing turbo on these engines – blue or black smoke under acceleration, unusual whistling, limp-mode activation, loss of responsiveness under full load – are often linked to insufficient lubrication or degraded oil, made worse by the short operating cycles typical of heavy family or professional use. On D27DT engines in particular, oil circuit sludge build-up is a recurring cause of failure. Fitting a new turbo without flushing the oil circuit and identifying the source of the original failure risks a repeat failure in short order. All turbos listed on this page are new turbos, sold as a straightforward purchase with no unit exchange required, supplied with their original manufacturer references or approved equivalents.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the turbo new or reconditioned?

The turbos on this page are new. Each product page states the original manufacturer reference and its equivalent references for your SsangYong.

What warranty comes with the turbo?

Every turbo is guaranteed for 12 months, provided it is fitted by a professional. The warranty covers the part; labour is not included. Before fitting, the cause of the previous failure (lubrication, oil feed, intake leak, EGR / DPF clogging) must be fixed.

Do I need to send back my old turbo?

No. The turbos on this page are new and sold as a straight sale: nothing to send back, your old turbo stays with you and there is one single delivery.

How do I make sure I order the right turbo for my SsangYong?

Compatibility depends on the engine code and the reference stamped on your turbo, not just on the model. Enter your number plate or request a quote: our advisers confirm the exact reference before you order. You can pay in up to 10 instalments.
